DE GAULLE WELCOMED IN MOSCOW MOSCOW: French President Charles de Gaulle is surrounded by wellwishers, many waving French flags, as he arrives at Moscow's Airport June 20 for the start of a ten-day visit to the Soviet Union. De Gaulle was met at the airport by Soviet President Nikolai Podgorny and Premier Alexei Kosygin. (6/20/66) UPI. Charles Andre Marie Joseph de Gaulle was born on November 22, 1890, at the home of his grandfather in Lille. He grew up in Paris, however, where his father, Henri de Gaulle, after service in the French Army, became Professor of Philosophy, Mathematics, and Literature in a Jesuit College. His mother, Jeanne Maillot, also came from a family which was both military and literary. \n fact, Charles de Gaulle's ancestors were prominent French noblemen and mili-tarymen. It is said that young Charles was reading the history of France before he was five years old. The meaning of his name may have engendered in him his deep interest in his country's past. His youth was spent entirely in military school, in military service, or teaching and writing military theory. De Gaulle married Yvonne Charlotte AnneMarie Vendroux, in 1921, in Calais, France. They had three children, Philippe (a naval officer), Elisabeth, and Anne (deceased). The flame of French resistance must and will not die! Must hope vanish? Is defeat definite? No! "I, General de Gaulle, now in London, summon the French officers and soldiers who are on British soil, or who may come there, with their arms or without their arms. I summon the engineers and skilled workers of the armament industries who are on British soil, or who may come there, to seek contact with me! "Whatever may occur, the flame of French resistance must not and will not die!" Contrast this stirring appeal with the words of Marshal Petain, broadcast from Bordeaux the day before: "It is with a broken heart that I tell you today that combat must cease. . . . Last night, I sent a message to the adversary ..." It is not difficult to understand the rise to fame of the one Frenchman and the decline of the other. A French author has said of De Gaulle, "His Very nakedness,' as he would say, forced him to appear as the 'inflexible champion of the nation and the State' and adopt a policy of 'intransigence'." Over the BBC De Gaulle said: "The leaders who, for many years, have been at the head of the French armies, have formed 4
