WARRANTY
36 MONTHS OR 100,000 KM
ACL warrants that all products manufactured by it which, within 36 months of sale, or 100,000
kilometres of use whichever shall occur first, are found upon examination by its representative to
be defective in materials or workmanship and not from a cause beyond the control of ACL including,
but not limited to, misuse, improper installation or operation, or lack of maintenance, will be replaced
by ACL free of charge following delivery of such product to the seller.
This warranty is in addition and subject to the conditions and warranties prescribed by statute
(“prescribed terms”).
Subject to prescribed terms, ACL’s obligation for liability for breach of prescribed terms is limited
at its option to replacement of the goods or supply of equivalent goods, repair of the goods,
payment of the cost of replacing the goods or acquiring equivalent goods or payment of the cost
of having the goods repaired.
The above warranty supersedes and excludes all prior and other discussions, representations and
arrangements relating to the supply of products including without limitation the suitability or
performance of the products or the results expected from using the products.
Subject to prescribed terms and the warranty set out above. ACL shall not be liable for any loss,
damage or injury of any kind whatsoever (including, without limitation, loss, damage or injury
caused by the default or negligence of ACL or its servants or agents and incidental and consequential
loss, damage or injury) in any manner wholly or partly arising from or in connection with any order
or relating to the supply of or otherwise concerning any products including, without limitation to the
foregoing, any defect in material design or workmanship of or any other defect whatsoever.
PERFORMANCE WARRANTY: ACL RACE Series engine bearings.
ACL “RACE” brand engine bearings are designed for improved performance and durability in engines
which have moderate increases in output compared to standard engines. ACL does not provide
any implied or express warranty on products used in engines over whose design it has no knowledge
or control. Users must accept responsibility for use in non-standard applications, including engines
used in competition or where exhaust emissions regulations apply. ACL reserves the right to make
product changes without notice and without incurring any liability for similar products previously
manufactured.
This special warranty prevails over any other ACL warranty for general engine products.

The information is very comprehensive and is available at a glance to the spare parts operator or
workshop machinist who has a clear understanding of the contents of each column. The following
explanations provide all the knowledge required to obtain the most from your ACL Catalogue/
Workshop Manual.
1.

SET NUMBER AND SIZES
CONROD

denotes Connecting Rod Bearings. Each engine requires one pair of identical CR bearings
per rod (excepting some Continental engines). One connecting rod (or “big-end”) bearing
SET contains the right quantity of bearing pairs to service all rods in the engine. ACL Con Rod
Bearings are only sold as complete sets.

MAINS

denotes Crankshaft Main Bearings Pairs. The position or location of each main pair in the
engine is shown by numbering from the front (No. 1) to the rear (flywheel end). Very often
engines require several pairs of quite different mains to make up a complete main bearing
set, hence ACL Main bearings are only sold as complete sets.

THRUST

denotes Thrust Washers and applies to engines that do not have a one-piece flanged bearing
in the main bearing set. Thrust washers are only sold as engine sets and should always be
ordered with the corresponding mains set.

CAMS

denotes Camshaft Bearings plus the location of each in the engine, using the same system
as main bearings, i.e. No. 1 camshaft bearing at the front. Camshaft bearings are only sold
as sets.

BUSH

denotes Small End Bush. Some engines have piston pins clamped or held with an interference
fit direct in the eye or small end of the con rod and therefore do not require bushes. Where
bushes are employed, each con rod requires one bush, with very few exceptions, e.g. early
Chevrolet. Small End Bushes are not sold in engine sets, though a minimum order quantity of
4 per Part No. applies for orders on the factory.

RA

denotes Rocker Arm Bush. These are offered for a limited range of engines under the same
conditions as Small End Bushes.

CLP

denotes Camshaft Locating (or thrust) Plate. These are offered for some Leyland and Holden
engines and one only per engine is required.

BS

Balance Shaft or Auxiliary Drive Bush.

The set reference number and stock sizes available are listed immediately below the set description.
Any pertinent comments affecting bearing set or bushing selection are noted in bold immediately to the
right of the set part number. Sets should be ordered exactly as shown in this column.

2. LOCATION
Defines the specific position of each bearing shell within the engine
3. COMPONENT NUMBER
In this column we show the component numbers applicable to the pairs or full circle bearings (e.g. cam
bearings) corresponding to their location in the first column. All or the pairs and/or full circle single
bearings required to make the set are shown here.
4. HALF TYPES
This information is provided to indicate where pairs are made up of different upper and lower halves
rather than containing identical uppers and lowers. Where uppers and lowers differ, “U” and “L” are
stamped on the respective halves and normally the notch or tang position will prevent incorrect fitment.
However, it is possible to fit some main bearings upside-down, particularly in certain Japanese applications,
and this can effectively block off crankpin oil feed, with disastrous consequences.

Literature dealing with the differing characteristics of these bearing materials is available on written
request to ACL.
In summary, the whitemetals, alutin and tri-metal copper-leads are the popular bearing materials in use.
F100 and F250 copper-leads plus the whitemetals are found in washer and bushing applications.
All ACL engine bearing materials are made under strict metallurgical quality control and continuing
research and development ensures that they remain at the forefront of world wide competition to meet
the ever-increasing demands of modern engine design.
Duraglide® 780 bearings are manufactured from F780 copper lead trimetal material.
Aluglide® 810 bearings are manufactured from F810 aluminium tin silicon bimetal material.

The Original Engine Manufacturers number is provided where known.
The OEM single/pair number is shown on the same line as the correct ACL single/pair replacement and
if known the OEM set reference is also shown corresponding to the ACL set.

This information is provided to enable accurate machining of bearing tunnels and crankshafts for the
fitment of ACL replacement bearings. Dimensions are provided for shaft and tunnel sizes as defined
by the OE vehicle manufacturer.
For each dimension, the imperial figure is shown first and the metric immediately below.

In some instances, the vertical oil clearances specified in the ACL catalogue may differ from those
of the OE vehicle manufacturers', as the ACL catalogue's clearances are a theoretical calculation
derived from the maximum and minimum clearances obtainable with all shaft diameter / housing
bore and bearing thickness combinations. Always adhere to the OE vehicle manufacturers'
recommended clearances where available.

11. MAXIMUM LENGTH

FITTING INSTRUCTIONS
To ensure a satisfactory bearing life, there are certain simple but vitally necessary rules which
must be closely observed. Because extreme accuracy is built into precision insert bearings, they
must not be filed, scraped or machined in any way.
They are machined to tolerances as fine as 0.006mm (.00025 inches) and cannot be improved
upon by any hand work, however skilful it may be. Follow the procedure outlined for a completely
satisfactory bearing assembly.
1.

DISMANTLE
Before dismantling the old bearings, mark the bearings housings for reassembly identification the caps must be reassembled exactly as removed.

2.

INSPECT
Remove the crankshaft and bearings for careful assessment of the extent of wear or other damage.
If either the crankshaft journal or bearing tunnel sizes are found to be outside the dimensions
shown in this catalogue, re-machining is recommended. If the used bearings exhibit signs of
unsatisfactory conditions in the engine, the source of these problems must be located and rectified
as well.
Common faults that old bearings will highlight include bent or twisted connecting rods, bent
crankshafts, misaligned tunnel bores, unsatisfactory journal surfaces, insufficient or excessive
nip, poor tunnel seats, mixed or reversed caps etc.

3.

CLEAN
Careful cleaning of the engine block and all components must be undertaken to be sure of
successful bearing replacement. By far the best way is to remove all gallery plugs and allow the
dis-assembled engine to soak in an agitated chemical bath (iron and aluminium-alloy components
require different chemical cleaners). In this way, all sludge and dirt accumulations are removed. If
chemical cleaning facilities are unavailable a less thorough, and therefore less desirable method, is
to remove gallery plugs and them remove all visible dirt and wash down with a solvent such as
Kerosene. It is imperative to ensure that the entire lubrication system is completely clean and free
of obstructions.

4.

CHECK DIMENSIONS
(a)
Always accurately measure all journals, con rod and mains tunnels prior to assembly to be
certain they are within the required tolerances, particularly if any re-sizing has been performed.
Remember, the bore of the assembled bearing can only be as accurate as the housing into
which it is fitted.
(b)
Check that replacement bearings are correct in all detail to the bearings removed, i.e. oil
holes, grooves and locating notch.

5.

CHECK NIP AND BACK CONTACT
It is necessary to check the NIP or crush fit of the new bearings in their housings and also the back
contact if the old bearing backs have any bright, shiny areas.
The procedure of this operation is:
(a)
Apply a coating of bearing “blue” to the cleaned tunnel seating and the joint faces of the
case or cap.
(b)
Clean and dry the bearings and apply bearing blue to the joint faces of one bearing. Assemble
the bearings into the housings, tightening the holding bolts evenly to the correct tension.
Threads should be oiled.
(c)
Accurately measure and write down the assembled internal diameters of each pair of
bearings, then release the bolt or bolts on one side only. This should allow the joint faces to
separate on this side. A feeler gauge of 0.10mm to 0.15mm (.004 - .006 inches) should be
accepted into the opening.
(d)
Release the remaining bolts and dismantle the bearing unit completely. An examination of
the housings and the bearings should reveal an even transference of “blue” from:
(i)
tunnel bores to back of bearing
(ii)
one bearing joint face to the other
(iii)
the cap joint face to the case joint face, or vice-versa.
An uneven transference of blue indicates some “off standard” condition to be investigated and
corrected.

6.

CHECK OIL CLEARANCE
With tunnel sizes correct to specification and shaft journals unworn or correctly ground undersize,
ACL finished-to-size bearings will provide a correct operating clearance which can be quickly
confirmed on assembly with the use of flexigauge .
Where doubt exists, or in special cases, oil clearance should be checked by accurately measuring
and writing down each journal diameter and then subtracting this from the corresponding internal
bearing diameters that were noted when checking the amount of nip. The difference between the
two diameters represents the vertical oil clearance and this must fall within the specified tolerance
shown against each part number in the Alphabetical Listing. Where recommended oil clearances
are unknown, the following information will assist the machinist in establishing a journal size that will
give a safe clearance:

NOTE: These clearances are recommended for normal passenger car type applications. For truck,
tractor and performance modified applications, add at least 0.013mm (.0005 in) to all figures.
7.

ASSEMBLE
Assemble the bearing shells with the SHELLBACKS AND THE HOUSINGS PERFECTLY DRY, but
use a liberal supply of heavy oil between the surface of the bearing and the shaft. Apply a light
tension on all bolts before finally tightening them evenly to the vehicle manufacturer’s specified
tension. When they have been finally tensioned, it is advisable to give them a firm sharp blow with
a SOFT hammer to neutralise any torsion which may have resulted from the tightening process.

8.

CHECK END FLOAT (THRUST CLEARANCE)
The recommended clearance differs from engine to engine though the following table provides a
good workable guide. It is advisable to check thrust clearances at both thrust faces to ensure an
accurate measurement.

Copper-Lead thrust bearings should be given slightly more clearance than whitemetal and alutin
thrusts and hard working engines should have a little more than normal duty engines, but always
within the high and low clearance figures shown.
Most thrust washer sets and some flanged mains are available in an oversize. Consult the Alphabetical
Listings for oversize thrust washer availablity. Main sets with over width flanges are noted in the
Alphabetical Listing (note next to the set number).

FLEXIGAUGE
Flexigauge is precision manufactured plastic strip.
It is available in four sizes and is used to check clearance of main and connecting rod bearings, and is
suitable for Automotive, Marine and Industrial applications.
The four sizes available together cover clearances from .001 in to .016 in, or .025mm to .406mm and as
follows:

Flexigauge strips - 12 in long - are packed in individual envelopes, which are marked in appropriate
graduation - one side in thousandths of an inch and the other side in millimetres. Ten strips in their
envelopes are packed in their appropriate coloured carton.
Directions for use, which are printed on the outside of each carton for easy reference, are as
follows:
1.
Remove the bearing cap, wipe the journal and bearing shell clear of oil.
2.
Place a piece of Flexigauge across the bearing at the crown (see Figure 1).
3.
Install the bearing cap and using a Torque Wrench tighten the bolts to the correct tension.
DO NOT REVOLVE THE SHAFT OR BEARINGS.
4.
Remove bearing cap. The Flexigauge will be adhering either to the bearing or shaft.
5.
Compare the width of the flattened Flexigauge with the graduation of the envelope. The figure
within the graduations indicates the clearance in thousandths of an inch of millimetres, depending
on which side of the envelope is used. (See Figure 2)
6.
Taper is indicated when Flexigauge is wider at one end than the other, the amount of taper being
the difference between the readings. The widest part of the Flexigauge represents the area of
least clearance. “Barrelling” of the shaft when the Flexigauge is wider in the centre of the bearing.

P R E C A UT I O N
When checking main bearings, with the CAP supporting the crankshaft, the weight of the
crankshaft and flywheel must be taken off the bearing caps to avoid inaccurate results. This
can be done, for example, by ‘ jacking’ on the crankshaft balance weight.
Main and connecting rod bearing clearances should be checked on the area of least journal
wear. Main bearing checks should be made with the adjacent crankpin situated about 30 degrees
after bottom dead centre.

TECHNICAL INFORMATION: ACL RACE SERIES
ENGINE BEARINGS
ACL Hi-Performance bearing sets are packaged under the ACL Race Series brand for easy recognition.

CONSTRUCTION
The bearings are manufactured with:
(a)

Steel backing material (Harder steel for improved strength and bearing retention for conrod bearings)

(b)

High fatigue strength copper lead lining.

(c)

Nickel barrier to prevent tin from the overlay migrating to the underlying copper lead lining (tin
diffusion reduces the strength of the overlay plate).

(d)

Lead/Tin/Copper babbitt overlay with enhanced chemistry for improved fatigue performance. Conrod
bearings have a reduced overlay thickness (0.013mm/0.0005”) for further improved overlay fatigue
strength.

SPECIAL FEATURES
Wall Size
Race Series bearings are manufactured to a ± 0.004mm (±0.00015”) wall size tolerance to ensure
consistent oil clearances when matched to a precision ground journal and correctly sized housing.
Eccentricity
Wall eccentricity has been increased to compensate for rod bore and block distortion (which occur due
to high inertia loads at high RPM) and to assist in the formation of an adequate oil film between the
bearing and crankshaft journal.
Crush
Crush has been increased over normal aftermarket bearings to provide secure placement in the housing
thereby ensuring full back contact for efficient heat transfer.
Partial (3/4) Grooving
Main bearing sets feature 3/4 grooving (or the addition of a partial groove on the lower half). This allows
for an increased oil supply to the highly loaded connecting rod bearings and also carries pressurized oil
closer to the highest load area on the lower main bearings. The partially grooved lower main bearings
do not suffer from the increased unit loading which occurs in the crown of bearing shells with fully
grooved lower main bearings. This increased loading is due to the reduction in cross sectional area
caused by the addition of the full groove.
Oversize Chamfers
Large chamfers are designed and precision machined to allow use with crankshafts with larger fillets
where applicable.

CAMSHAFT BEARINGS
For some applications, cam bearings in heavy duty aluminium material are available. Whilst these bearings
will take much heavier loading than the lead based babbitt materials commonly used for most cam
bearing applications, correct alignment of housings and correct assembly are important to ensure
satisfactory performance. The camshaft must rotate freely after assembly; a minimum clearance of
0.038mm (0.0015”) should apply to these heavy duty cam bearings and a good lubricant supply (and
pre-lubrication at assembly) is very important.
