ACHILLES, Jochen & Ina BERGMANN (eds.),
Representations of Evil in Fiction and Film,
WVT, Wissenschaftlicher Verlag Trier,
(Anglistik, Amerikanistik, Anglophonie, 11),
2009, 279 pages.
This
collection
of
essays
examines
representations of evil in the English-speaking
world, especially in fiction and film. Some
articles also touch upon evil in poetry, drama
and political discourse. Though mainly
centering on the nineteenth and twentieth
century, this volume does cover a wide variety
of phenomena, countries, genres, and media
and may therefore function as an introductory
survey to the phenomenon of evil in
Anglophone literatures and cultures. The
contributors try to elucidate the phenomenon
of evil by approaching it from various angles,
ranging from classic to popular cultural
reflections in American, British, and
Postcolonial Literatures. Individual essays
discuss texts by William Shakespeare,
Charlotte Brontë, Thomas Hardy, Oscar Wilde,
Graham Greene, Aldous Huxley, Anthony
Burgess, J. M. Coetzee, Ian McEwan, Arundhati
Roy, and Margaret Atwood, as well as Ralph
Waldo Emerson, Walt Whitman, Nathaniel
Hawthorne, Edgar Allan Poe, Herman Melville,
Richard Wright, N. Scott Momaday, Greg
Sarris, Norman Mailer, Bret Easton Ellis, Joyce
Carol Oates, Chuck Palahniuk, Stuart O'Nan,
Caleb Carr, Matthew Pearl, Erik Larson, Hal
Lindsey, Robert Van Kampen, Tim LaHaye and
Jerry Jenkins. The visual art form of movies is
represented by discussions of films such as The
Birth of a Nation, The Night of the Hunter, The Usual
Suspects and, especially, David Lynch's Blue
V e l v e t , Lost Highway, and Mulholland Drive.
Furthermore, the political speech of George W.
Bush and Tony Blair is explored for its strategic
use of evil.

CASTA, Isabelle-Rachel (dir.), Si d’aventure...

d’Amiens.

such as South Park, The Simpsons, The Onion,
The Daily Show, Chappelle's Show, and The
Boondocks, are chosen for their political scope
and social impact and demonstrate the ways in
which what we know as "politics" is rapidly
changing.

ABBOTT, Jon, Stephen J. Cannell Television
Productions : A History of all Series and
Pilots, Jefferson (NC), McFarland, 2009, viii,
386 pages.
The face of 1980s television was shaped by a
man who stayed behind the scenes. Stephen
Cannell’s reluctant white knights—put-upon
private eye James Rockford, World War II flyboys the Black Sheep Squadron, hapless
superhero Ralph Hinckley, fugitive mercenaries
the
A-Team,
and
maverick
cop
Hunter—traversed the television landscape
from the 1970s to the 1990s. Cannell changed
the face of the action-adventure genre,
updating the crime-show format with a hybrid
of rebellious morality, juvenile wit, intelligent
sarcasm, and radical conservatism. This book
discusses in detail the programs of the writerproducer and lists every episode of his award-

winning productions from the early 1970s to
the early ’90s. The book features publicity
photos and descriptions of unsold pilots.

A SIGNALER
BAUDOU, Jacques, Encyclopédie de la
fantasy, Paris, Éditions Fetjaine, 2009, 176
pages.

auteurs exceptionnels parmi lesquels Robin
Hobb, Terry Pratchett, Terry Goodkind, Robert
Holdstock, Raymond Feist et un nombre
impressionnant d'auteurs français au succès
croissant.

Beyond Cyberpunk : New Critical Perspectives, New York, Routledge, (Routledge

In this collection of essays, contributors
consider the continuing cultural relevance of
the cyberpunk genre into the new millennium.
Cyberpunk is no longer an emergent
phenomenon, but in our digital age of CGIdriven entertainment, the information
economy, and globalized capital, we have
never more been in need of a fiction capable of
engaging with a world shaped by information
technology. Contributors seek to move beyond
the narrow strictures of cyberpunk as defined
in the Eighties and contribute to an ongoing
discussion of how to negotiate exchanges
among information technologies, global
capitalism, and human social existence. Essays
offer a variety of perspectives on cyberpunk’s
diversity and how this sub-genre remains
relevant amidst its transformation from a print
fiction genre into a more generalized set of
cultural practices, tackling the question of what
it is that cyberpunk narratives continue to offer
us in those intersections of literary, cultural,
theoretical, academic, and technocultural
environments.

Long before Edward Cullen and the Twilight
phenomenon, there was Angel, Barnabas
Collins and Bela Lugosi, and many others in
between. They are vampires — the undead.
Add an infusion of Bella, Buffy and Carla
Laemmle, then sprinkle in unforgettable
characters such as Renfield and little Eddie
Munster, and you have a capsule of how
cinematic vampires are viewed by today’s
world. But there were vampires walking this
earth long before the invention of movies and
television. In this book, author David J. Skal
weaves a narrative history of vampirism, from
the ancient Aztecs through the writings of
Bram Stoker, Anne Rice and Stephenie Meyer.
But what makes this book even more unique
are the replicas tucked inside sleeves and
pockets. There are removable photos of Bram
Stoker, Carmilla and Lord Byron. For movie
buffs, it has posters from Nosferatu, Dracula
Has Risen From The Grave starring Christopher
Lee, and Bram Stoker’s Dracula — along with a
replica of Stoker’s “Dracula” notes. It also has
photographs from Forks, Washington, where
the Twilight series is based. Take a walk
through the history of the undead, with
romance, horror and blood along the way.

Guiley, author of Encyclopedia of Vampires,

SCIENCE FICTION STUDIES
vol. 36, no 3, november 2009 (# 109)
Science Fiction and Sexuality

ELLUG. Avec des textes de Aurélia Gaillard,
Yves Citton, Anne Defrance, Françoise Gevrey,
Philippe Gervais, Emmanuelle Sempère, Magali
Fourgnaud, Hall Bjornstad, Jean-Paul Sermain,
Jean-François Perrin, Marina Guister.

Rough justice has often been served in the
pages of serial novels, notably beginning with
Don Pendleton’s The Executioner in 1969. This
is the first overview of the serial vigilante
genre, which featured such hard-boiled
protagonists as Nick Carter, Mark Stone, Jake
Brand and Able Team among the 130 series
that followed Pendleton’s novel.__Serial
vigilantes repeatedly take the law into their
own hands, establishing and imposing their
own moral standards, usually by force. The
book examines the connections between the
serial vigilante and the pulp hero that preceded
him and how the serial vigilante has influenced
a variety of tough guys, private eyes, spies and
cops in different media. A complete
bibliography for each series is featured.

The True Crime Stories that Inspired the

An in-depth look at the inspiration behind the
greatest crime films ever made. Real-life bank
robbers, twisted serial killers, and pulp novels
have all helped shape the world of crime
cinema. From Kiss Me Deadly, Bonnie & Clyde and
Psycho, to The Godfather and L.A. Confidential, Max
Decharne uncovers the little-known stories
behind each of these classic films and more.
Thanks to Hollywood, failed bank robbers
Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow are forever
fixed in popular imagination. Middle-aged
Wisconsin serial killer Ed Gein is now forever
embodied in Anthony Perkin’s unforgettable
portrayal of Norman Bates in Hitchcock’s
Psycho. The true-life origins of these films are
now revealed in Max Décharné’s revelatory
volume—the stories perhaps more fascinating
than even their Hollywood representations. 20

The book begins with the silent period and its
vamps, like Theda Bara, Pola Negri, Clara Bow,
and Bebe Daniels, then moves on to the PreCode sound period of American films, which,
showing liberated attitudes toward sex and
women, featured actresses like Jean Harlow,
Marlene Dietrich, and Greta Garbo. The story
continues with the noir 1940s, when the
femme fatale became truly lethal - including
actresses like Ava Gardner, Rita Hayworth, and
Barbara Stanwyck. In the repressive 1950s,
the international femme fatale took the fore Brigitte Bardot, Maria Felix, Elizabeth Taylor,
Anita Ekberg, etc. Finally, the authors turn to
the revolutionary post-feminist modern period,
with an array of lethal ladies from all over the
world, like Pam Grier, Salma Hayek, Gong Li,
Angelina Jolie, and Sharon Stone.

trappers, punchers and vaqueros and elevating
the cowboy to an epic hero. Swiss view-painter
Karl Bodmer, in search of a "savage America,"
risked his life to paint bloody Indian battles and
explore Mississippi steamboat culture. With 370
plates, nearly half in color, this companion
volume to an upcoming PBS-TV series glorifies
the legends of the Wild West even as it dissects
them. Artists of European descent who

« 40 years ago as a graduate student I wrote a
book about Spaghetti Westerns, called 10,000
Ways to Die. It’s an embarrassing tome when I
look at it now: full of half-assed semiotics and
other attenuated academic nonsense. In the
intervening period I have had the interesting
experience of being a film director. So now,
when I watch these films, I’m looking at them
from a different perspective. A professional
perspective, maybe... I’m thinking about what
the filmmakers intended, how they did that
shot, how the director felt when his film was
recut by the studio, and he was creatively and
financially screwed. 10,000 Ways to Die is an
entirely new book about an under-studied
subject, the Spaghetti Western, from a
director’s POV. Not only have these films stood
the test of time; some of them are very high
art.'

Michael Cimino, Francis Ford Coppola, Stanley
guerre. Par sa démesure, par sa cruauté, par
l'amertume et les questionnements qu'elle
suscita, l'intervention américaine au Viêt-nam
constitue toujours un repère incontournable
pour les scénaristes d'outre-Atlantique.

Shell Shock Cinema explores how the classical
German cinema of the Weimar Republic was
haunted by the horrors of World War I and the
trauma of Germany's humiliating defeat. In this
exciting new book, Anton Kaes argues that
masterworks such as The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari,
Nosferatu, The Nibelungen, and Metropolis, even
though they do not depict battle scenes or
soldiers in combat, engaged the war and
registered its tragic aftermath. These films
reveal a wounded nation in post-traumatic
shock, reeling from a devastating defeat that it
never officially acknowledged, let alone
accepted.

This book provides summaries and analyses of
more than 250 novels and nearly 30 films and
examines the extent to which they accurately
reflect the history, mores and manners of the
period—and the extent to which they reveal the
ideas and attitudes of their authors and of the
periods in which they were written. Particular
emphasis is placed on the nature and
importance of the war at sea for the British and
on the role of famous naval officers such as
Nelson, Pellew, Duncan, Smith and Cochrane in
the defeat of Napoleon.
PERTWEE, Bill, Dad’s Army : The Making of
a Television Legend, London, Conway Maritime Press, 2009, 208 pages.
"Dad's Army" has been an enduring highlight of
the small screen since its debut on British
television in 1968. The show, which follows the
exploits of the Home Guard of Walmington-onSea, a fictional seaside town on the south coast
of England, ran for nine series in total,
comprising 80 episodes, and regularly attracted
viewing figures of over 18 million at the height
of its popularity. Today, it is still shown weekly
on BBC 2 and was recently placed fourth in a
BBC poll of Britain's Best Sitcoms Ever. The
show has permeated British society, with the
characters' signature catchphrases (particularly
Captain Mainwaring's 'Stupid boy!') having
entered the lexicon of popular culture. Such is
its appeal that in August 2008 Jonathan Ross
paid tribute to "Dad's Army" with an hour-long
special, looking back on the show's success and
reliving its funniest moments.

been a staple of cinema and the background
for many different story genres, from anti-war
comedies such as M*A*S*H to the heroic feats
of combat troops and fighter pilots played by
the likes of John Wayne and other screen
favorites. Films are presented in chronological
order to illustrate the genre’s development and
the impact early artists had on later directors,
actors, and technicians. Plot summaries are
presented, casts and credits are listed, and
illustrations include ad posters and evocative
movie stills. More than 200 illustrations.

The 20 essays in this accessible book explore
the nature of supervillainy, examine the
boundaries of good and evil, offer helpful
advice to prospective supervillains, and
untangle diabolical puzzles of identity and
consciousness. All the legends are here, from
Dr. Doom and the Spectre to the Joker and the
Watchmen, reconsidered through the lens of
classic and modern philosophy.
