Cat 3306 DITA diesel engine features
high displacement and low rpm rating
for long service life and low
maintenance costs.
■ Four-stroke cycle design provides
long, effective power strokes for
more complete fuel combustion.
■ Direct-injection fuel system delivers
efficient, precise fuel metering.
■ High torque rise provides unequalled
lugging force during acceleration.
■ Turbocharged and aftercooled for
better fuel efficiency and lower
emissions.
Planetary autoshift transmission
provides smooth shifts at factory preset
shift points. Electronic control system
assures precise match of engine torque
to ground speed.
■ Large-diameter, perimeter-mounted
clutches with heat-treated steel clutch
plates deliver maximum durability.
■ Modulating pressure valve regulates
hydraulic actuation pressures, easing
clutches together, reducing shocks on
components and providing longer
life.
4
■
Electronic Transmission Control
monitors engine rpm electronically
and executes shifts at factory-preset
points for optimum performance and
efficiency.
— Engine Overspeed Protection
shifts the transmission up one gear
during an overspeed condition.
— Top gear may be programmed to
match the job requirements.
— Body-up Protection prevents the
transmission from shifting above a
programmed gear if the hoist lever
is not in “float.”
— Downshift inhibitor.
— Neutral coast inhibitor.
— Stores transmission shift history,
event data and malfunctioning
component fault codes for use by
service personnel.
— Hoist control feature provides
improved modulation of body
raise and lower functions.

Final drives are outboard-mounted,
planetary design to lessen torque loads
on other drive train components.
■ Large-capacity, tapered roller
bearings in wheels and Caterpillar
Duo-Cone seals deliver maximum
reliability under severe working
conditions.
Torque converter multiplies torque for
high rimpull.
■ Allows fast acceleration and delivers
exceptional power through soft
underfoot conditions.
■ Automatic lock-up provides fuelefficient, direct-drive hauling.
Multi-plate, inter-axle differential on
the D250E Series II divides torque
between the front and rear axle
differentials for excellent traction when
needed in poor underfoot conditions.
Under normal conditions, the inter-axle
differential divides torque 40% to front
axle and 60% to rear axles. When the
locking system is activated, all three
axles lock in unison. In addition, a
cross-axle differential locking system
provides 100% drive line locking — all
three axles and all six wheels — for
maximum performance in adverse
conditions.
The operator engages the inter-axle
differential lock with a foot control
located in the cab. Activating a switch
on the dashboard and depressing the
floor control engages both the inter-axle
differential and the cross-axle
differential locks.
Both systems can be engaged and
disengaged on-the-go for maximum
flexibility.
5
Box-section Frame
The strong backbone of a Caterpillar® Articulated Truck.
Rear frame. Twin-box construction
minimizes stress concentration,
provides low weight and long service
life.
■ Body hoist and rear suspension pivots
are positioned to minimize stress
concentration.
6
Articulating/oscillating hitch allows
articulated steering and helps ensure allwheel ground contact.
■ Eliminates torsional stress between
front and rear frames.
■ Steel alloy forged tube and cast head
are robotically welded together to
form a hitch with unmatched strength
and durability.
■ Uses two large-diameter adjustable
bearings in hitch tube to allow
oscillation and to carry high vertical
and longitudinal load stresses.
Front frame features internally braced,
heavy, deep box-section construction
with integral bumper.
Truck Body
Designed for easy loading, superior load retention and clean load ejection.
Large body volume and low center of
gravity result in high material capacity,
excellent stability and easy loading
from a variety of loading systems.
■ Bowl-shaped Diverging Flow design
provides for easy loading and cleaner
load ejection.
■ Thick sidewall, front and bottom
plates, manufactured from high yield
steel, assure maximum body
durability.
■ Two-stage ducktail design provides
enhanced superior load retention on
steeper operating grades.
■ Integral spill guard aids load retention
and protects the hitch area.
■ Divergent base-plate design promotes
smooth material flow for clean load
ejection.
■ Provision for exhaust heat to body is
standard.
■ Optional bolt-on underslung and
scissor-type tailgates provide
improved material retention to meet
specific application requirements.
■ Double-acting, single-stage hoist
cylinders, combined with a powerful
hydraulic system, deliver fast dump
cycles.

Operator's Station
Control, comfort and confidence contribute to top productivity.
Sound-suppressed ROPS/FOPS cab is
resiliently mounted for reduced
vibration and noise. Tilts to rear for
easy service access.
Excellent view all around for confident
operation. Laminated and tinted front
and rear windows; tempered side and
rear windows. Intermittent windshield
wipers and washers are standard.
Heater and optional air conditioning
systems located outside the cab for
added room and reduced noise levels.
Air circulation system delivers filtered,
pressurized, temperature-controlled air.
Ergonomically designed wrap-around
dash sets a new industry standard for
styling, comfort and ease of operation.
The result is higher performance by
operators for greater productivity.
■ Steering column tilts and telescopes
for improved operator comfort and
efficiency.
■ Horn button located on steering
wheel for easy access.
D250E Series II Electronic Monitoring
System (EMS II) constantly monitors
critical machine functions and alerts
operator to problems before
catastrophic failures occur.
Cushioned companion seat with seat
belt provides comfortable
accommodation for rider.
Caterpillar Contour Series Seat is
ergonomically designed and fully
adjustable for maximum operator
comfort.
■ Seat cushion is rolled down across the
front to reduce pressure on the thighs.
■ Cushion side bolsters restrain side-toside movement when operating on
side slopes and rough terrain. Front
corners are flat and open for
unrestricted leg movement.
8
■
■
■
Cushion is flat across the rear to
prevent discomfort caused by hip
displacement common with buckettype seats.
Backrest centerline conforms to the
operator's spinal curve. Contour at
bottom is relieved away from lower
back to reduce pressure.
Backrest also has a transverse curve
to provide additional side-to-side
support.
■
■
■
■
Backrest extension provides
additional upper back support.
Fully adjustable seat allows the
operator to position himself for
maximum comfort.
An air suspension seat is standard.
Wide retractable seat belt for ease of
entering and exiting the cab.
Suspension
Unique all-wheel system provides smooth ride, allows high hauling speeds.
Axles are similar for parts
commonality. Integral flanges with
machined faces allow direct mounting
to front or rear subframes for simple
installation and removal.
■ Cross axle differential locks
compensate for difference in traction
between left and right wheels.
■ Series II brake system is a dualcircuit, all-wheel system. A fullpower hydraulic system actuates
self-cleaning caliper disc brakes, with
independent front and rear circuits
and accumulators. A multi-plate, oilimmersed parking brake mounts on
the transmission. It’s operated by a
push button, spring applied and
hydraulically released. The brake
is durable and quiet.
Front axle is mounted on a swinging
cradle subframe arrangement which
pivots on the front frame to allow
cushioning movement in vertical plane.
■ Two large-bore, long-stroke cylinders
provide excellent cushioning and
dampening.
■ High capacity nitrogen accumulator
absorbs hauling and loading shocks
transmitted by oil from the
suspension cylinders.
■ Body load stresses go directly to the
suspension system rather than being
absorbed by the frame. This extends
the life of the frame and provides a
more comfortable ride for the
operator.
Through-drive center axle means one
drivetrain instead of two for greater
reliability and durability. Fewer
components mean less maintenance.
Rear axle — Mechanical balance beam
suspension connects rear axles with
elastomer springs, allowing all four rear
wheels to remain in constant ground
contact. System improves vehicle
traction and flotation.
■
■
Axle castings are mounted to
A-frames. Each is centrally attached
to the rear frame by a lateral tie rod
and spherical bearing.
Arrangement allows wide range of
axle oscillation and independent
wheel movement.
