Advanced International Training Programme
“Integrated Sustainable Coastal Management”
For the Middle East and North Africa region
in Sweden, September 3 – 21, 2012
and in Jordan, January 21 – February 1, 2013
Advanced International Training Programmes (ITP) are funded by the Swedish
International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida). Programmes are organised
in a number of technical and administrative fields where Sweden has experience
and expertise to share.
Sweden’s coastline is 3218 kilometres long, and Sweden has a lengthy tradition for
integrated planning and sustainable development approaches. Considerable
experience is available among governmental agencies, universities, private
companies and civil society organisations. Like many places in the World, coastal
areas in the Middle East and North Africa region (MENA) are exposed to serious
challenges related to high population density and competitive use of natural
resources and ecosystem services from agriculture, fishery, tourism, industry and
urban development. Social needs and sensitive ecosystems as well as effects from
climate change increase the importance of sustainable development and integrated
planning and management approaches, where the needs and rights of vulnerable
groups are taken into account.
Sida has therefore decided to sponsor a training programme on “Integrated
Sustainable Coastal Development” for the MENA region. The programme runs from
July 2012 to October 2013 and consists of five compulsory phases including three
self-study phases and two scheduled courses, one in Sweden, September 3 – 21,
2012 and one in Jordan, January 21 – February 1, 2013.
The training programme is developed and implemented by NIRAS Sweden in close
co-operation with the School of Global Studies at Gothenburg University and the
Royal Marine Conservation Society of Jordan.
On behalf of Sida, we have the honour to invite all relevant organisations within
your country to nominate candidates to this programme.
The training programme is aimed at decision and policy makers in coastal
management and development, key persons with the ability to initiate and drive a
process of change, subject-matter specialists with responsibilities related to
planning and use of coastal zones, and other professionals with key positions in
organisations involved in coastal development. This can include central institutions,
local authorities, private companies, universities, media and NGOs.
The training programme will be conducted in English.
Applicants should hold an academic degree and have at least 5 years of
professional working experience in relevant areas. Only candidates with official
nomination from their home organisation will be accepted.
Please find more information in the enclosed brochure and application form for the
training programme. The application form and programme brochure are available
for download on NIRAS’s website: www.niras.com
Sida strives to obtain a gender balance, and female candidates are in particular
encouraged to apply for the programme.
Sida provides scholarships for the participants covering participation fee,
accommodation and meals. International travel to and from Sweden and personal
expenses are NOT covered by this scholarship. International travel costs for
participation in Jordan are covered by Sida.
Closing date for application is May 1, 2012. By then the application forms should
have reached the nearest Swedish Embassy.
