F

ashionland has announced a freefor-all on colour this season. That’s
right, colour-lovers: it’s out with
the drab and in with the hue – as in
just about any variation of any colour on
the wheel.
As seen at Rosemount Australian
Fashion Week SS 11/12, layers of
fuchsia, chartreuse, turquoise, tangerine,
citrus and red will ring in the warmer
weather with endless combinations in
every texture imaginable.
Arguably the belle of the fashion week
ball was Toni Maticevski, who received
plaudits for his range of evening couture
indented with the odd wearable day
piece. Among layers of tulle, silk chiffon
and feathers, drapes of lush fabric, tiered
frills and pleats, the hero was a colour
combination that is clocked to be the
number one trend this season; saturated
cherry red teamed with neutral tones.
Alex Perry declared a season of
“punchy colours” and amped it up in his
turquoise, tangerine and citrus love affair.
Carl Kapp joined in with block
colours of soft peach and orange sorbets
alongside opaque blues, greens, reds and
yellows.
Digital prints in fluro pops of blue,
orange, purple and yellow teamed with
soft peach tones in Emma Mulholland’s
funky line; colours echoed in the floral
prints of Jennifer Hawkins’ swimwear
label, Cozi.
Across the board the message is clear;
when it comes to colours, contrast
strong colours with peaches, pastels and
neutrals.
Whether flowy and excessive or sharp
and linear; cinched at the waist was a
popular look. Designers Dion Lee and
Kirrily Johnston bucked the fluid lines in
favour of more architecturally-tailored
shapes.
Polished, bronzed skin is beckoned into
the spotlight this season, via a generous
use of lace, risqué frontal skirt slits and
strategic cut-outs, featured in the likes of
Zimmerman.
Layers of peach, yellow and orange
reappeared to star at the Myer Spring
Summer fashion launch last month,
where Jennifer Hawkins showcased
sass&bide.
These eclectic looks can be neatly
polished off with a thin waisted belt, a
boho-inspired tote or an oversized straw
hat for a hint of Côte d’Azur. Bold, tribal
neckpieces and oversized bangles will be
popular among jewellery devotees.
Menswear is not immune to the colour
injection; bold blocks sauntered down
the catwalks of Paris and Milan in the
collections of Ricardo Tisci (Givenchy),
Veronique Nichanian (Hermes), Antonio
Marras (Kenzo), Bill Gaytten (John
Galliano) and Bottega Veneta.
Collections across the board confirmed
all our hopes: ‘tis the season to dump the
dull and bring on the brights.
