Haiti has a considerable water potential of which
only approximately 10% of water resources
available are exploited.
Aquifers potential is estimated at approximately 56
billion m3, distributed in 48 billion m3 of continuous
aquifers, the remainder being discontinuous.
Aquifers systems are currently overexploited for
drinking water, irrigation and domestic uses.

Metal and microbiological contaminations
Seawater pollution probably due to
overexploitation;
Groundwater quality in Haiti become more and
more vulnerable to contamination related to the
earthquake of January 12, 2010.
Groundwater consumption represent sanitary and
epidemiological risks (Cholera) for users in Haiti.

Northeast population of Haiti
depends on groundwater :

358 277 inhabitants

Chlorides concentration from some boreholes are largely
higher (318.66 – 810.89 mg .L-1) than the values
thresholds suggested by PAHO/WHO for drinking water
[250 mg/L].

National Committees and Focal Points IHP-LAC present at the meeting
supported the proposal made by the Haitian IHP National Committee to declare
Haiti Massacre Basin (Northeast Department of Haiti) as "pilot basin" for the
implementation of the IHP activities, and recommend to the IHP-LAC office the
formation of a working group ad-hoc for the preparation of a project and define
the actions and results.
