The Rwandan Cultural Health Centre (RCHC) Ltd is located in Kigali City, Gasabo
District, Remera Sector, Nyarutarama Cell in Kangondo I Village after MTN Centre at Moitié Point
just at Kibagabaga Road, KG 655 AV.
After realizing his research on Rwandan cultural ‘Kirazira’ and mental health” in 2010,
NZAYISENGA Modeste, a Clinical Psychologist, Rwandan cultural Psychotherapist, being also
founder of this Cultural Psychotherapy, a Rwandan Traditional Healer by both inheritance and talent, a
Professional in Cultural Health based Issues, took the initiative of creating the Rwandan Cultural
Health Centre as a sustainable solution to different cultural health problems and mainly for promotion
of Rwandan Culture in the family through the main aim of the Centre: “the development of the
country basing on Culture as a especial approach to get a both healthy and wealthy community”. The
research has taken two years working with special clinical cases which were rooted in Rwandan
culture while they were for long time unhealed using conventional therapies created from abroad in
other cultures. He has been working with Ministry of Sports and Culture and other concerned
Institutions, different professionals and experts in both domains of culture and health. He ended up
that research with all those cases healed through his created Rwandan Cultural Psychotherapy. He then
was also inspired to put his research findings into practice creating the Centre with the aim of finding
new solutions basing on culture for sustainable development of the Country. RCHC has the mission
of creating and promoting cultural based services for self realization thus the development of the
whole community. It has the vision of helping people for self realization, getting inside thoughtfulness
and wisdom inside their culture thus become higher thinkers, good resources of the country for its
development.
There are different services offered by the centre. Clinical services such as Natural traditional
Medicine for body, Rwandan Cultural Psychotherapy for soul (Mind) as well as we use developed
traditional music therapy, different cultural based healing techniques through the power of touch using
massages and reflexology and Healing therapies for Spirit in order to both heal and treat human being
wholly (Spirit-Soul/Mind-Body) basing on one’s culture.
Research and Training Services such as Cultural Health related Researches; Culture education,
Cultural Health based Trainings, training in arts, handcraft and in artifacts, traditional music
education, and Consultancy activities are offered by RCHC. There is also Rwandan Culture Permanent
Exhibition (RCPE), in which there are different Rwandan based traditions and cultural products
offered at the Centre. In the framework of permanent culture education there is a program of Culture
Tourism, the program that is the specific initiation of the Centre designed and developed effectively as
it has been appreciated and encouraged by both Ministry of Sports and Culture (MINISPOC), Rwanda
Development Board (RDB) and other partners in the project.
This Culture Tourism program also has the specialty to go beyond tangible aspects of culture and get
inside hence materializes the untouchable aspects that are found in different traditions, rituals and
myths using psychological approaches.

RCHC continuous to work in collaboration with Ministry of Sports and Culture, It has participated and
contributed in Culture Week, 2012 with theme of CULTURE,THE SOURCE OF DEVELOPMENT.
It took place from 19-23rd November 2012 at Kigali, Small Stadium.
A great number of Rwandese and foreigners visit the centre to learn more about Rwandan culture.
Different authorities from different governmental and non governmental institutions such as Ministry
of Sport and Culture, UNESCO, RDB, MEDIA…have been visiting the centre to assess how
important this centre is contributing to the Rwandan society. In July 2012, Professor Carl Auerbach,
an expert in trauma from Yeshiva University (USA) has visited the centre with the purpose of learning
how we heal trauma based on our new cultural approach: “Rwandan Cultural Psychotherapy (RCP)”.
He appreciated the way the centre is both creative and innovative basing on indigenous’ culture. He
promised to come back with enough time so that other clinicians and researchers from abroad could
learn from Rwandan approach as well. Beside Rwandan Cultural Psychotherapy, RCHC came up with
a new mind conditioning technique after those initiated by Skiner, a Russian and Skinner, an
American. After having their conditioning techniques being none easily usable to Rwandan, a
specialist of RCHC has been inspired to create a cultural based mind conditioning tool called:
‘ISHYIKIZO’ (Mind conditioning seats for kids). 08th November 2012, RCHC signed a MOU for
partnership with CPSAR, CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGISTS STUDENTS’ ASSOCIATION OF
RWANDA located at National University of Rwanda. This MOU aims at promoting and delivery of
psychological and cultural services in Rwandan Community and Human society in general for its both
healthy and wealthy states. Basing on this MOU there have been organized a workshop on
PSYCHOLOGY AND CULTURE, THE ROLE OF CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGIST IN THE
SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT OF THE COUNTRY held at National University of Rwanda
(NUR) 08th December 2012 through which RCHC got into collaboration too with INATEK and are
planning to organize such workshop at INATEK as well.
One of the current activities which has been helping many individuals in the exploitation of
one’s potentiality in effective way, is the new program of “Talent Detection”. In this program, the
centre uses professional techniques to detect the talent in persons and helps to develop them so that
they can generate income in their daily life. On 10 th September 2012, the representative of Minister of
Sport and Culture came to congratulate 13 Ladies who have finished professional trainings of making
“ISHEMA RY’ABAGORE Hand Bag1” accomplished within 34 days through this program of talent
detection where Ergo-therapy is used in a preventive way to get a both healthy and wealthy person.
Those women came from different areas of the country. They have been raised up from low
self esteem to high one feeling worthy to be demonstrated able and having special potentiality to
contribute in the development of the Country. This program of talent detection will be soon extended
in the whole community especially in the children who are attending schools. The centre has started
collaboration with Rwanda Education Board (REB) so that we can start to apply the program to detect
gifted and talented students in different schools.

ISHEMA RY’ABAGORE Handbag or Ladies’ Pride Handbag, this is the name of a new cultural based
product mainly a handcrafted handbag that is made at the Centre and is ready to be sold at both
National and International Market.

Moreover, from action research, mainly in the program of Rwandan Cultural Health Based
Services, this centre has revealed that human being is undividable unit twice. First from his or herself
means a triune being made of Spirit, Soul (Mind) and Body, one dimension is attacked the whole
being is attacked too thus needs to be healed wholly. Second, human being is undividable unit from
his or her culture. Whatever you can do then for/with any person, you should consider the person in
this context so that you can achieve what you want to understand from him or her, to teach him or her,
even to let him or her change in his or her previous way of believing, thinking and/or behaving hence
change the way of living in general. From this conception RCHC activities are founded and/or adapted
on/to culture and the centre helps other institutions or organizations which need to work in this
framework for sustainable development getting human being in both healthy and wealthy states.
Recently RCHC has been working with The National Council of People with Disabilities (NCPD) in
the Disability Week (25/11/2012-03/12/2012). RCHC contributed especially through Psycho-Social
Systematic sensitization of both the community and people living with disabilities on removing
barriers, starting from mindset barriers, to create an inclusive and accessible society for all. This
has been realized in the Centre’s weekly provided Radio show which especially aims at psycho-socialcultural systematic education to the people getting the society master of ignorance, source of different
illnesses.
