AIR TRANSAT COMPONENT
April 29th, 2005
Dear Sir,
We are writing to you today concerning safety in our workplace, more specifically crew complement in
relation to flight attendant to passenger ratio on board our aircraft.
Currently, Canadian Aviation Regulations require a ratio of 1 flight attendant per 40 passengers. There
has recently been a notice of proposed amendment which would allow air carriers in Canada to choose
whether to operate under the 1 per 40 or under the 1 per 50 ratio as found in the US FARS. This proposed
amendment (NPAs 2000-331 & 2000-332) was tabled at the December, 2000 CASO where it was
strongly opposed by unions, passenger safety & consumer groups. This amendment to the 1 in 40
regulation is once again being discussed at SCOT with an aim to moving towards the US regulation.
The Air Transat Component, representing the flight attendants, believe that safety is non negotiable and is
a joint responsibility, requiring both the employee’s and employer’s cooperation and mutual concern in
continuing to provide the level of safety upon which our flight attendants, customers and our industry
depend.
A move to 1 in 50, during these times when there is a greater need for onboard surveillance, is a move
away from a safe and secure airline industry. We, as flight attendants, are required to evacuate an aircraft
in less than 90 seconds, where any deviation from this time frame can result in loss of life.
For the above reasons, and many others where safety and security are concerned, our Component is
campaigning against this move towards 1 in 50. We are therefore asking Air Transat to join their flight
attendants in maintaining our current high standard of safety and we are thus requesting your opposition
to any deviation to the current regulations of 1 per 40.
In a joint coalition, we can keep our industry safe.
Sincerely,
