JANUARY 2015 ANNOUNCEMENT

2nd QUARTER 2015 ARRIVAL
HO CLASSIC RS-3 & RSD-4/5 Locomotive
HO
SCALE
www.atlasrr.com/HOLoco/hors3classic8.htm
Well over 1,300 RS-3 road-switcher locomotives were built by ALCO between 1950 and 1956. It can be considered one of the most successful four-axle diesel road-switchers ever produced by the builder. These 1,600hp
locomotives were powered by an ALCO 244 V-12 engine, which was complemented by rugged GE electrical
components. The RS-3 was truly a versatile locomotive. It could be found in virtually every type of service from
passenger and commuter runs to heavy-haul and local freight assignments. Original owners of the RS-3 tended
to be in the eastern and central regions of the US (with heavier concentrations in the northeast and southeast).
During this same time-period, ALCO offered a six-axle road-switcher, which was more commonly found in the
west. The RSD-4/5 was externally very similar to the RS-3, having six-axle trucks as an obvious spotting feature.
They produced the same 1,600hp as an RS-3, but offered increased tractive effort due to the use of a larger
generator. Many RSD-4/5s were assigned to operate in mountainous territory (with varying degrees of success)
on the Southern Pacific, Santa Fe and the Utah Railway.

3rd QUARTER 2015 ARRIVAL
HO MASTER C420 Locomotive
HO
SCALE
www.atlasrr.com/HOLoco/hoc420e.htm
ALCO built a total of 131 Century 420 locomotives between 1963 and 1969, when the builder ceased all new
locomotive production.
Powered by a 12-cylinder, turbocharged, 2,000-hp 251-series prime mover, the C420’s direct competitor in 1963
was the EMD GP18. In fact, EMD did not offer a 12-cylinder, 2,000-hp prime mover until the GP39 model was
produced in 1969. The shorter 12-cylinder engine block allowed the C420 to have its distinctive set-back cab
and extended short hood.
The first road to purchase the C420 was the Lehigh & Hudson River, with its first two units built in 1963. The largest
fleet was purchased by the Long Island Railroad, with 30 units built between 1963 and 1968. All were equipped
with a high short hood which housed a steam generator for passenger service. Over time, the largest fleet of
C420s was amassed by the Louisville & Nashville. While only 26 units were purchased new, their total fleet grew
to well over 60 units through mergers and acquisitions. The C420 can still be found in daily service today in the
US. Currently the largest fleet of C420s is operated by the Arkansas & Missouri Railroad.
This run of Atlas C420 Locomotives feature Phase 2 versions, featuring both Low & High Nose models. Early
phase 2 locomotives feature phase 1-style walkways/sills with stanchions mounted into the top walkway deck
(referred to as “Phase 2a” models). Later phase 2 locomotives feature a revised configuration where the stanchions are mounted to the sides of the sill (referred to as “Phase 2b” models). Phase 2a production ran from
December 1964 through September 1965. Phase 2b units were produced from December 1965 through the
end of C420 locomotive production in August 1968.

4th QUARTER 2015 ARRIVAL
HO MASTER B23-7/30-7 Locomotive
HO
SCALE
www.atlasrr.com/HOLoco/hob307c.htm
General Electric’s “Dash 7” locomotive line was introduced as a replacement for the older “Universal-Series” of
the 60s and early 70s. “Dash 7” series improvements included increased fuel efficiency, tractive effort and reliability. The B23-7 was a direct replacement for the 2,250HP U23B model, while the B30-7 replaced the 3,000HP
U30B. The first B23-7s were produced for Conrail in September, 1977, and the first B30-7s were produced for
Frisco three months later.
B23-7 production continued through 1984, with a total of 535 units built. Conrail was the largest purchaser of
the model, with a total fleet of 141 units. 199 B30-7s were produced through 1981, with the combined fleets of
Southern Pacific and Cotton Belt being the largest at 110 units.
Several features distinguished B23-7s and B30-7s from predecessor models. The long hood stepped outward in
the area of the exhaust stack to accommodate a relocated oil cooler. In addition, the frame was 2 feet longer
than that of the U23B. An FB-2 style truck was offered as standard equipment, but some railroads opted to use
“trade-in” trucks. Therefore, AAR type B and Blomberg trucks could be found on some models. Six power assembly doors (located near the center of the long hood) indicated that the B23-7 was powered by a 12-cylinder GE FDL engine. Eight power assembly doors in the same location help to identify the B30-7, which included
a 16-cylinder FDL engine.

HO MASTER MP15DC Locomotive
HO
SCALE
www.atlasrr.com/HOLoco/homp15f.htm
The 1500hp MP15DC was designed by EMD as a replacement model for the successful SW1500 switcher. The
longer frame of the MP15DC allowed for increased fuel capacity and the use of Blomberg road trucks; increased sand capacity was also offered as an option. The first MP15DCs were built for Missouri Pacific in February 1974 and a total of 351 units were produced through the end of production in January 1983.
The MP15DC is a versatile locomotive that is employed by both large and small railroads across North America
in road freight and yard switching duties. It was also purchased by several non-railroad corporations for use in
plant switching service.
Atlas’ model includes the three different styles of long hood that were common to the MP15DC throughout
production: standard hood, hood with square air filter box and hood with angled air filter box (the air filter box
is located in the area immediately ahead of the cab). In addition, various styles of hood and cab-end sand
boxes are being offered.

HO TRAINMAN® PS-2 COVERED HOPPER
www.atlastrainman.com/HOFreight/tmhops2.htm
Covered hoppers are a relatively new car family. The AAR considered these “special” cars until the 1980s when they
finally got their own car type code category. These early covered hopper designs were built primarily for more efficient
cement loading and unloading (previously cement was bagged and placed in box cars). This two-bay covered hopper car design was built by Pullman-Standard starting in the late 1940s with production continuing into the 1950s. This
car features eight round roof hatches for quick loading. Two large gravity gates were used to discharge the commodity as quickly as possible. Capacity is rated at 2,003 cubic foot.
FEATURES:
• 50-ton friction bearing or 70-ton roller bearing trucks
(as appropriate by road name)
• Detailed brake gear
• Accumate® couplers

HO TRAINMAN® ALUMINUM COAL GONDOLA
www.atlastrainman.com/HOFreight/tmhoalumcoalgon.htm
Transporting coal on the railways has been around as long as the railways. Two major types of cars emerged for hauling coal; hoppers and gondolas. The earlier cars were made of wood, then steel, and later aluminum. The lighter
weight of aluminum allows greater lading and cubic foot capacities ideal for bulk mineral transport. By the 1980s, both
coal hoppers and coal gondolas were using aluminum bodies in their construction.
The Trainman® aluminum coal gondola model represents a typical Association of American Railroads car type code
J311, a gondola car with a load limit greater than 185,000 lbs, depressed bottom, and 36’ to 48’ interior length. Typical
of these cars is the rotary coupler usually signified by a contrasting colour on one or, both ends. The Trainman model
has thirteen side stakes and a double tub bottom. Gross Rail Loading is rated at 286,000 lbs.

HO MASTER THRALL 2743 GONDOLA
www.atlasrr.com/HOFreight/hothrallgon5.htm
The Thrall Car 2743 cubic foot gondola was introduced in 1995. This new 52’ 6” interior length design was in response
to the newly allowed increase in Gross Rail Loading (GRL) to 286,000 lbs (up from 263,000 lbs). This allowed an increase
of the inside height from the previously standard 5’0” to a new standard of 5’6”, giving it a 2,743 cubic foot capacity.
Thrall produced over 6,700 of these from 1995 to 1999. The design resumed production under Trinityrail in 2005.
FEATURES:
• Prototypical scale height reflecting the new higher capacity standard
• Fourteen side posts
• Detailed brake components
• Etched platform
• Etched end reinforcement plate

HO MASTER ARTICULATED AUTO CARRIER
www.atlasrr.com/HOFreight/hoartauto4.htm
Articulated railway cars became more popular in the 1980s in an effort toward reducing train length and total train
weight while maintaining cargo capacity. Following the success of articulated intermodal well cars, Thrall Car, applied
the same principle on a new design for bi-level auto carrier service. The cars fit within the same plate clearances as
standard racked auto carrier cars and offer greater protection from theft and the elements due to its solid side design.

www.atlasrr.com/HOFreight/ho5077boxcar3.htm
This is FMC’s entry into the Plate B IPD (Incentive Per Diem) box car era. The design was intended to be the most “universal,” interchangeable on most common railroad clearances. The cars were available with and without end-of-car
cushioning, and were offered in several door configurations.
Over 4,300 cars were produced from 1975 to 1979 by FMC’s Portland, Oregon plant. The cars were delivered in numerous colorful shortline paint schemes as well as the

HO TRAINMAN® 1937 AAR 40’ BOX CAR KIT
www.atlastrainman.com/HOFreight/tmho1937boxcar.htm
The 1937 AAR Box Car is widely recognized as the first standard freight car design to be voluntarily adopted by the
majority of railroads throughout the United States. Although previous USRA designs also achieved widespread distribution, their success was mostly due to government control rather than popular acceptance.
The 1937 AAR Box Car also had many features that became standard on boxcars for years to come, including dreadnaught ends, straight panel roof and an inside length of 40’ 6”. They had an interior height of 10’ with a 3700 cubic foot
capacity. With only a few variations built, this design helped the industry realize the economic advantages of freight
equipment standardization; a concept that continues into the modern era.
