WHY
THIS
CAMPAIGN ?

Traveling Europe by train is natural for the big majority of travellers from overseas markets, as they are afraid to drive in Europe and
consequently look for a hassle-free and safe way to go from one place to another, from city centre to city centre. Our clients do not only
appreciate the speed and comfort of European trains, but also the fact that train travel is good value for money, flexible and above all, a true
European experience. Last but not least, some cities or regions have no airport and can only be visited by rail!
Nevertheless, it is still difficult for our clients to plan their holiday as they usually have little knowledge of where and how to go from one
location to another by train.
The aim of the RAIL EUROPE CONNEXION campaign is therefore to inspire them and give them ideas by displaying great itineraries
they can easily follow so as to make the most of their trip in Europe. We want to show them that Europe is a fantastic destination, easy to
explore, and that all regions and cities in Europe offer such a great diversity and richness!
Our aim : make them explore as many places as possible and make them stay longer !

CAMPAIGN’S STRATEGY
The RAIL EUROPE CONNEXION campaign has been set up since 2012 so as to fully integrate the company’s strategy:
It is a BtoC campaign: there is a need on most markets to target final clients directly, as the % of direct sales is growing steadily; over 35%
of Rail Europe 4A’s turnover is now originating from our 36 BtoC websites – most markets are also now massively FIT oriented, as repeaters
to Europe especially do not travel in groups anymore
The campaign is inspirational: it has become a necessity to inspire clients with destinations rather than with information on the trains only;
people do not travel only because a great rail service connects 2 cities, but most importantly they travel because the two cities on both sides
are worth a visit and inspire them for their holiday! Integrating ‘destinations’ in Rail Europe’s communication is now fully part of our strategy
The campaign is multichannel: all our markets are different and have reached a different maturity level; the campaign has therefore been
built around several tools, including printing, web and PR – the idea is to maximise exposure and mutualise contents

AN ASIAN
CAMPAIGN
This year the campaign aimed exclusively the Asian market
with a focus on China considering the fantastic growth of Asian
tourists in Europe for whom Europe represents a top attractive
touristic destination.

The campaign consists in 4 projects:
a Magazine that is inserted and distributed in 4 markets
a Website with further content, directly linked to our BtoC websites
so as to enable travellers to book their tickets and passes on-line
Social Media activities
- Asian key and qualitative markets are covered: China, Hong Kong,
Taïwan, South Korea
- 4 languages: Simplified/Traditional Chinese, Korean, English
- Print run: 1,374,000 copies

CHÂTEAU ROYAL D’AMBOISE

At the dawn of the Renaissance period, the powerful
medieval fortress of Amboise gave way to a royal

A visit of the royal lodgings, the imposing towers and
the beautiful panoramic gardens overlooking the Loire

Hello everyone,

Leonardo da Vinci ‘s residence

The Château du Clos Lucé is famously known for being
the last dwelling of Leonardo da Vinci. At the invitation
of King François I, the famous artist came to live at the
Château du Clos Lucé bringing with him his notebooks,
sketches and three of his major paintings: Saint Anne,
the Virgin and Child, Saint John the Baptist and the
famous Mona Lisa. The Master stayed there for the last
three years of his life, devoting himself to perfecting his
inventions, designing the double-helix open staircase in
the nearby Château de Chambord and drawing plans
for a model castle for François I. Discover models made
from his original drawings, and have a stroll in the
garden which is a real open-air museum.

DAY1

DAY2

Wertheim Village, Frankfurt

Brussels is so much more than a suspiciously
boring political and administrative centre.
The capital of Flanders, and the de facto capital
of Europe, is a mosaic of languages, cultures and
traditions, hosts over eighty museums, numerous
tourist attractions, a vibrant nightlife, countless
restaurants and endless shopping opportunities.
The starting point for any visit to Brussels is the
Grand Place, so often described as the most
beautiful square in the world.
A brief stroll away and on your way to admire
Manneken Pis, a miniscule statue with a largerthan-life reputation, you’ll notice many facades
adorned with striking comic frescos. Indeed, this
too is Brussels: comic strip walls, comic strip shops
and even a comic strip museum... Surreal!

In the morning hop on just any of the many trains to
Antwerp (0h40 trip) to discover this fashionably trendy
city. Antwerp has always been boosting with creativity
and was home to great artists such as Rubens and
Anthony Van Dyck. Surely don’t miss the Rubens
House, and of course the Cathedral of Our Lady where
some of Rubens’ masterpieces adorn the walls.
But even today Antwerp is a hotbed of creativity: stroll
through the fashion quarter, and see new design talent
at work, or find yourself a unique piece that genuinely
reflects your personality. Winding down after some
excessive shopping, head down to the riverside: the old
quays at “Het Eilandje” are a place to see and be seen...

Brussels

With more than 110 luxury boutiques and featuring
savings on exclusive German labels – as well as
international names – just 50 minutes from central
Frankfurt.

Just an hour from Brussels, Antwerp and Cologne,
discover more than 100 luxury outlet boutiques
featuring leading local and international brands.

Brussels > Antwerp

DAY3

Antwerp > Ghent

From Antwerp (0h55 trip) or Brussels (0h35 trip) take

a train to Ghent, a city praised for its brilliant mix of
history and liveliness. Here hides one of Europe’s
finest panoramas and centuries-old grand houses.
Actually, this is the one city the locals wish to claim all
to themselves, so they’ve labelled it “Belgium’s best
kept secret”. All the more reason to go!

DAY4

3

5

Ghent > Bruges

Only a short distance from Ghent (0h25 trip) the city of
Bruges rises from the coastal planes. The entire city
is a UNESCO world heritage site, and it surely is the
best-preserved example of medieval Flanders. With so
many waterways meandering through the city, there
are countless bridges that cross the water – hence the
city’s name, which in the local language does mean
“bridge”. So what better way to discover the city than
hopping on a boat and floating across the water...

Bordering on Germany, Poland, Austria and Slovakia, the Czech Republic has always stood at a crossroads of cultures. Its rich history is full of
fascinating stories and its significance extends far beyond the borders of the country. In 2012, the Czech Republic celebrated the 20th anniversary of
the inclusion of its first historic sites in the prestigious UNESCO world heritage list: the historic town centres of Prague, Český Krumlov and Telč. The
list has been growing ever since and it now includes 12 Czech landmarks with another 14 in the application process. The capital city of Prague, the
city of one hundred spires, leads the way with many visitors coming to enjoy its beautiful architecture and delightful ambiance each year. The best
place to begin discovering the Czech Republic is Prague, undoubtedly one of the most charming cities in the world. Prague can be easily reached
by train from other European cities - Berlin (4h30 trip), Munich (4h30 trip) or Krakow (8h15 trip). www.czechtourism.com

comfort is always appreciated. Onboard
are spacious carriages with large seats

City centre to city centre

Most major train stations are located
in the heart of the cities and benefit
from excellent connections with other
public transportation. When travelling
by train, travellers avoid transfers,
endless queues at crowded airports
or the stress of driving in a different
country and reach their destination
fresh and relaxed.

Local experience

Comfort

From high speed trains offering an
efficient and rapid connection between
two cities to luxurious trains or
panoramic trains offering spectacular
scenery, a train ride can be a destination
in itself.

Whether it is for long or short journeys,
comfort is always appreciated. Onboard
are spacious carriages with large seats
and space for luggage. Passengers
can easily walk on the train or socialise
at the bar-buffet car. While 2nd class
offers good value for money, 1st class
can be very affordable.

Be green

Think about making trips a little
greener by travelling by train. Wellestablished high speed rail systems
operate in a more environmentally
friendly way than any other means of
transport.

Save money

Whether a traveller chooses a Pass or a
Point to Point ticket, he will always get
attractive prices. Tickets can be very
affordable when booked in advance
and Passes not only offer discounts but
also give access to free bonuses.

Other passes of the Eurail range also cover Germany: the Eurail Global Pass, the Eurail Select Pass
and several Eurail Regional Passes that enable travellers to combine Germany with another bordering
country of their choice (Austria, Benelux, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Poland or Switzerland).
For travellers who do not need to travel extensively during their stay in Germany, Point to Point tickets
are available to travel from one city to another. DB operates high-speed trains linking all major cities of
Germany (check the ICE services with your Rail Europe expert) as well as local and regional services.

SouthWest Germany is one of Europe’s most romantic destinations: think of the Black Forest, the romantic city of Heidelberg, picture postcard
villages and fairy-tale castles! But SouthWest Germany also offers a variety from the world’s finest automobile museums to award-winning
vineyards and from world-class music and ballet to great hiking and cycling. It is the home to global brands like Mercedes-Benz and Porsche.
Summers are hot and winters crisp, springs lively and autumns glorious. Bordered by Bavaria, the French Alsace region, Switzerland and Austria,
this sunny state in the very heart of Europe is called Baden-Württemberg in German. Stuttgart, the capital city of the region, can be reached in less
than 90 minutes by ICE train from Frankfurt, 2 h 40 from Basel and 2 h 15 from Munich. www.tourism-bw.com
