KnCC was officially established on 24th June 2011 by merging KnPT and
KLMC. KnCC aims at preparing the students to be efficient in various
professions and also equipping those who wish to continue their study with
proficiency in English.
The Karenni Post Ten School (KnPT) was established by Karenni Education
Department – KnED in 1995 with the aim of upgrading English language skills of
Karenni high school graduates. But, since then, its curriculum has been modified
in line with the adjusted objectives to satisfy the growing needs of the community
due to its increasing student population. KnPT graduates have been serving their
community on every corner of it.
The Burma Program Education Office (BPEO) and the British embassy in
Bangkok jointly funded the school in 1997. But BPEO was the program’s sole
funder from 1998 up until 2006. In 2007 and 2008, Thabyay Education Network
and WEAVE jointly funded the program. In 2009, Canadian Embassy Fund, and
in 2010 Child’s Dream. However, later years saw inadequate education
opportunities for Karenni high school graduates, in terms of intake and learning
Therefore, in 2003, Karenni Leadership and Management Course – KLMC was
set up by Karenni Students Union and Karenni Teacher Union with the aim of
training high school graduates with community management and leadership skills
in order for them to be able to serve their community in CBOs, upon completion
of the course. This program was first financially supported by a catholic
foundation from Australia. But, from 2005 onward still 2010, Karenni Student
Development Program – KSDP was the principal funder of the program.
After 2007, despite large-scale resettlement, there is still a steady need or
demand for post ten education because new arrivals are filling in the place of
leaving refugees. However, the schools are facing staff shortage because of
resettlement impact and discontinuity of financial support of their previous
funders because of many constraints.
Therefore, in order to sustain their functioning, KnPT and KLMC have been
merged, in the hope that available resources will be utilized while lifting their
standard of service.
In the beginning of January 2016, we have decided to change KnCC’s name to
KnNC for multiple reasons. We want the school to become a national school
instead of a community school in the aim of being integrated within the Burmese
education. The recognition of our education by the Thai-Burmese government is
also primordial. Finally promoting and preserving our literature, language and our
culture to ensure our future.

Chapter 1: Meeting updating

Seh Theh


Seh Theh (New Stars) Learning Center
(STLC) was established in 2013 aims to
empower youth for the greater advancement
of their community. STLC dedicated to
empowering and building the capacity of
young adults to effectively serve for their
community. It is located in Deemawso, Kayah
State, Myanmar. STLC is a branch school of
KnNC and supported by Child’s Dream
Foundation. STLC gives priority in admission
to those failed the government matriculation
exam and unable to continue their education.
STLC offers a two-year program focusing on
life skills subjects includes English, Social
Sciences, Computer, Civic Education,
Community, Management, Karenni language,
Basic Law and Human Rights. The course
also includes field works and two months
internship hosted by respective CSOs, NGOs
and INGOs. The curricular based on Studentcentered and critical thinking.

 On the 2nd and 3rd of December, the coordinator of KnNC ( Ms.
Elizabeth Mimar) has attended a workshop in Mae Hong Son
organized by JRS Thailand-Myanmar (Jesuit Refugee Service) in
order to discuss about the education repatriation and as a result to
come out with an operation plan.
 The plan will include the overall education system: childhood
education, basic education (grade 1 to 10), special education and
finally the higher education (post grade 10). If a future repatriation
will happen, the main actors of this workshop have discussed what
they need to prepare in advance and what they need to plan.
 One of the Thai government representatives has also been invited in
the aim of being aware of a future Karenni education policy plan for
an eventual repatriation.

Elizabeth Mimar was born on 15 April 1978
in a small village called Na On, Eastern
Myanmar (Burma).
Due to the civil war, Mimar abandon her
homeland and became a refugee in
neighboring country (Thailand) since she was
nine years old.

In June 2015 I have integrated KnNC as
an English teacher and I am very proud to
be a part of this community and to share
each instant of my life with my student. I
have been teaching since 2013 in
Thailand. I have taught in primary school
nearly a year within a Karen village close
to Khun Yuam District, Thailand.
I have always wanted to learn more about
the refugee situation and background and
have tried hard to teach within one of the
refugee camp (Mae Surin, Camp 2)
without success. I have found KnNC after
long research and today I can say that it
is one of the best things that have
happened in my life. Never give up and
trust to yourself, the destiny will do the


Elizabeth Mimar was born on the Thai-Myanmar border. Mimar finished her post high school
in the refugee camp, in 1997. She then chose to work. Mimar was offered a job with some
International Organizations. This alternative way not only helps to support her family but also
enable her to gain invaluable experiences and benefit to her community. She was a co-founder
of Karenni Student Union in 2000 and was continuously elected as a chair person for two
terms (6 years). In 2003, as a leader of the student union, she managed to establish a school
called “Karenni Leadership and Management Course” based in Karenni refugee camp -1.
Mimar chose to help in education since she realized it is the foundation of human
development. She served as a teacher at Karenni Post Ten (Art and Sciences) where she used
to studied and Karenni Leadership and Management which was founded under her leadership
at KSU. Mimar had to divide her time to teach at two schools due to serious teacher shortage
which caused a lot of challenges. As a result, in 2011, these two schools were combined and
Mimar was appointed to be a Coordinator. In 2013, she established a school named Seh Theh
Learning Center located in Karenni state, Myanmar. In 2014, she was appointed with another
position, Deputy Director of Karenni Education Department to responsible for other education
related activities. Mimar never give up for her own education as she is currently studying
online at an Australia university.

KnED meeting

In the beginning of January, the Karenni Educational Department and KnNC
coordinator have convened. The main point of this meeting was to set up the
educational policy for the overall of Karenni refugee education.

At the end of the meeting the draft of the educational policy was done. It is the
first time that the Karenni refugee education has set up an education policy.

During the meeting KnNC has promoted the importance of the college and want
to extend the duration of the school year from two year to three year. The last
year will become obligatory for each student that will attend high school.

STLC School

Child’s Dream updating meeting

The coordinator (Elizabeth Mimar) and the foreign teacher (Andy Grosbois) went to
Chiang Mai in the middle of November 2015 to meet with the head higher education
Mr. Thomas Brittner.
SLTC school (branch of KnNC school) in Demoso (Karenni state,Myanmar) was the
main point of the conversation, in fact Child’s Dream has for objective to build a
school there. A plan of the future building has been presented.
A problem might compromise this project: the legal land-owner certificate is missing.
As a result, it will be very difficult to invest in a fancy building there without this
certificate. Mrs. Elizabeth has explained that it is very difficult to obtain it but she will
discuss again with KnPP (the legal land-owner after the ceasefire in 1995).


Mr. Thomas Brittner has also reminded that with the actual conjuncture and the
political situation within Myanmar will certainly become more stable after the 8
November election and that an repatriation will happen, it is difficult for them to
continue to find donors that will invest for the education within the camp and has
encouraged KnNC to think about the future of the school.

On 19th and 20th of December the 20th alumni
anniversary has taken place in KnNC School, section
The old batch from KnPT and KLMC have exchanged
about their own experiences after being graduated.
They have also discussed about different action plan that
should be set up for the future and have decided to
M the name of KnCC to KnNC for 4 main reasons:

1. We have decided to change the name
KnCC to KnNC.
2. We ask both government (Thai-Myanmar)
to recognize our education and certificate.
3. We request the Burmese government and
KnPP to allocate budget for education.
4. We want KnPP and the government to
support with land inside Karenni state.
5. We found alumni committee (40 people
committee members). Every 2 years alumni
will happen. (Next 2017).

Chapter 3: School activities

KnNC intramural games
Intramural games has taken place from 15th to 18th December in
KnNC school section #18.
All KnCC students were divided into 4 teams (yellow, red, green
and blue) in two sections and have played different sports:
volleyball, Cane ball and badminton as well as cognitive games.
During the night time, all the students have presented different
representations and shows such as talent show, fashion show,
singing competition, and group dance competition.
All the groups did an excellent work and the public was amazed.
A fundraising project has been set up by the students during the
day. The students have sold different kind of food (papaya
salad, cold drinks)

Youth Social Education
From the 30th of November to the 4th of December our volunteer
teacher Vera and her sister (Ruth) have given to DCD class 5
days courses about the ’’ young social education”.
During those day, games, activities and experiences sharing have
been done between students and teachers.
All the students were interested to learn the respect and equal
rights between men and women. The biological of the human body
such as menstruation and the human sexual organs function have
been explained by Ruth.
The sexuality was also one of the main point during the workshop.
Students were divided into 2 groups (boys and girls) and have
asked questions between each other’s such as using
contraception and feelings with respect before a sexual act.


Becoming pregnant too young is also a big issue within the
teenagers and young adults. Teachers have shown all the
consequences (education, employment, family and financial
issues). Nowadays a lot of young couple got baby by “accident”
within the camp and it was a good opportunity for the students to
being aware that having a baby will considerably change their lives
and future plan.

Community Profile book
During December 2015, 27 students who are attending Diploma in Community Development Course
(DCD) have to make research about the community profile in Karenni Refugee Camp#1.
The goals

Creating a book: it is your identity, history for next generation.
Getting donors, social networks and actualization website, post to universities and news
To figure out about social problems, infrastructure, governing, how to improve economic
Exploring the economic potentials and needs.
Observing social needs.
Publish, getting donations.
Student’s objectives:

To promote skills and knowledge for the students.
To gain unity and cooperation among the students.
To learn about the information that currently happening in the community and sharing to
To apply in the fields that was learned from class.

After we have collected all of the information that we needed, we will create a history book with both
Burmese and English languages which will contribute to the understanding of the community for the
next generation. We’ll share it by means of KnNC website or social networking.

Chapter 4: Student creativity and articles

Rural Children Most Likely to Miss Out on Education
The majority of children who receive no education in Kayah
State live in rural areas according to Sayar Mozet from the
Local Development Network (LDN).
He said: “Some children cannot go to school because their
parents do not give them the chance. They need to work on
farms and take care of their younger brothers and sisters. ”He
said that when LDN made a rural development survey they
found that most school-age children were helping their parents
by working.
The areas where the problem of children not going to school
are worst in Kayah State are: Lo-Bar-Kho and Daw-Yauk-Khu
village-tracts in remote areas of Demawso Township; villages
in Bawlakhe District, Yoar-Thit Sub-Township; and Ho-Yar, KKaw and Daw-Law-Saw village-tracts in Pruso Township.
Daw Meme Htwe, the head teacher of Daw-Khu Primary
School explained that because grades four, eight and ten will
have to take government exams in the 2014-15 school year
they are offering free after school classes.She said: “Now no
fees [of any sort] are collected in school.”
Previously tuition was free but students’ parents had to pay for
registration fees, books and sometimes other things like
furniture and teaching aids.
Sayar Mozet explained that parents have no idea of children’s
rights and do not realize how important education is, so they
do not send their children to school. They would prefer to have
the children working with them because that can provide poor
families with valuable extra income.

Fortunately, now, I am a KnNC
student second year. Today, I am
extremely happy. In the future, I am
going to try my best to carry on my
education. After that, I plan to return

Also, the children of former internally displaced persons (IDPs)
who have returned to their old villages in Hsataw Township are
unable to study because there is a lack of teaching aids and
other essential equipment.

When I was at home, my parents couldn’t support my
education because we are a lot of people in my family. The
education in Myanmar costs a lot of money. Economy and
livelihood are also bad there and most of the population
suffered from lack of education and job.
I’m being lucky because I have had the chance to get a free
education within the camp. Today I am studying at KnNC
second year (academic class) and I am proud to learn here.
When I’ll finish high school I will go to further study and
apply to Chiang Mai university. I will try my best in order to
be useful within my community. Studying hard it’s my only
priority and I would like to tell you that you never have to
forget that you are the best and you must try hard to realize
your dreams.


A farewell ceremony for successful applicants to a
government-backed study abroad program was held at the
Sule Shangri-La hotel in Rangoon on Monday evening.
In July 2014, the Burmese government announced it would
offer scholarships for outstanding students wishing to study
undergraduate and postgraduate courses abroad.
Shwe Taung Group of companies, which has business
interests in real estate, construction and engineering, is
covering the airfare costs of the first batch of students selected
for the program, called the President’s Scholarship Awards.
Thurein Zwe, a successful applicant who attended the
gathering on Monday, said fellow awardees were drawn from
across the country and were required to have at least an Olevel standard of English—an internationally recognized

According to a full-page announcement in state-run media last
year, students of all ages were invited to apply for the
program, with those holding an honor’s degree or
postgraduate diploma able to apply for a master’s degree
scholarship, and those with a master’s degree able to apply for
a doctorate degree.
Students who receive a scholarship are obliged to work in
government jobs after their return for twice the duration of
their scholarship, or repay triple the amount they received for
their scholarship, according to the announcement by the
Ministry of Education on July 29 last year.
One originally successful candidate, Burmese model Zune
Thinzar, had her invitation apparently rescinded after her
inclusion sparked a storm of online criticism.
“I don’t know where the event took place,” she told The
Irrawaddy regarding Monday night’s event. “I am still waiting
on their consideration. [But] I think I was left off their list.”


Zune Thinzar also criticized the fact that successful applicants
were forced to work in governmental positions upon their
return to Burma.

scholarships competition for Burmese
students wishing to study abroad.
Here are some things you need to

deadlines this year. The deadline for
follow-on students applying for
continued funding is February 19

is March 18 2016. Make sure you

and two for new applicants (one for

Chapter 6: Office construction

KnNC office construction
At the beginning of November, a French NGO: A.I.M.E
(Association International pour la Mobilite et l’Egalite) has
provided 760 euros (28.000 Baht) for the construction of the new
KnNC teacher office in Dokita.
The construction has started on the 30 of November 2015, with 2
couples from France: Aline-Manue and Delphine-Alex. We have
started with the student to demolish the old building (roof,
bamboo wall, poles)
The next step was to put the other half of the floor in cement and
to continue the walls in block which surrounded the old office.
The last part was the most complicated. We wanted to change
the frame of the old roof and to replace the wood frame by an
iron frame. Alex did an amazing work during two weeks and has
overcome different difficulties.
With this fund we have also bought some construction tools such
as welder, drill and electric grinder.
On the behalf of all the school, we would like to thanks all the
French people that have helped and especially Alex that has
supervised all the construction and that has accomplished his
mission on time.
Thanks to A.I.M.E in Paris that have provided those fund and that
without them this project could not have been realized.

Chapter 7 : Fundraising Project
T-shirt fundraising project:
During the 20th alumni anniversary, KnNC teachers have made Karenni t-shirt that they have sold during the event.
They will also create a new design that they will sell during the student’s exchange in Karenni state. More than 350 tshirt have been sold and 50,000 baht have been raised. This amount will serve for the student’s exchange that will
star on the 14th until the 18th of January.
Andy’s fundraising project (French)
Andy the KnNC English teacher has done a 50 days fundraising campaign within a French website (Ulule). During this
campaign his friends has participated actively and organized a Fundraising party on the 14th of October in France. 1400
euros have been raised and 2500 euro at the end of the campaign. Those funds will serve for the school stationary
or school building.

The previous KnNC English teacher Mrs. Catlin Bresnahan has set up a fundraising page on the famous American
website “GoFundMe”. The campaign it today on going and 2400 dollars have been raised.
