VEHICLE CONNECTIVITY TODAY AND TOMORROW
 Vehicles get connected to the cloud using
mobile networks.
 Seamless integration of personal devices
enables connected services (Ford SYNC).
 Drivers access their vehicles using a
smartphone app (Ford SYNC Connect)

 Car-to-car (C2C) and car-to-infrastructure
(C2I) communication connect vehicles to
each other and to the infrastructure.
 Cooperative vehicles have the potential to
provide foresighted information and
warnings for the driver, even if event is out
of sight.

APPLICATION: ELECTRONIC BRAKE LIGHT
• Inform and warn the driver in advance
about a hard braking vehicle ahead, in
particular if the braking vehicle is not in
the line of sight.
• The function can be divided into two
parts:

o “Detect an emergency braking"
and transmit to other vehicles,
together with vehicle data such as
position, speed, deceleration and
heading.
o “Warn the driver about hard braking
vehicle ahead” if a hazardous
situation is detected taking into
account received information and own
driving path and speed.

TECHNICAL RESULTS: ELECTRONIC BRAKE LIGHT
• Depending on driving situation:
• Increased minimal Time to Collision (TTC)

• Earlier speed reduction
• Maximum deceleration increases
• Average Latency for all received messages
(delay between brake detection and warning to
the driver):
• < 200 msec
• Correct detection of hard braking event in host
vehicle based on measured speed and
deceleration:
• No false alarms detected

APPLICATION: OBSTACLE/ ROAD WORKS WARNING


Inform the driver about
o Obstacles,

o Broken-down vehicle, and
o Road construction ahead.



Event information is encoded in
DENMs with sign code, location, and
relevance area.



Driver shall be prepared for an upcoming event, i.e. reduction of lanes or
speed limits, and may already slow down the vehicle

• Warn drivers along a trace to the event in a DENM
Trace matching to trigger driver advice
Aggregation of similar events nearby into a single event

Warning distance accuracy < 10 m (when matched on the trace)
Revocation distance accuracy also < 10m (after 25m after event)

SUMMARY
• Vehicles become more and more connected, e.g. with Ford SYNC.
• Vehicles of the future are expected to use car-to-car (C2C) and car-toinfrastructure (C2I) communication.
• Field Operational Tests across Europe have successfully demonstrated the
potential of V2X communication to allow safer, more efficient and more
comfortable driving:
• Foresighted warning against hazardous situations, even if out of sight
due to a bend or other vehicles ahead
• Continuous updates about traffic jams, road works and detour
recommendations to enhance trip planning
• C2X deployment in Europe is expected to start within the next 5 years.
