Linguae Mundi is the University-wide language
programme at Coventry University and offers language
courses to students, staff, alumni and members of the
public. Languages are learnt from the best possible
source – a native speaker. The language classes are
tailor-made to learn how to communicate in a foreign
language in everyday situations, and involve a practical
and interactive teaching approach.



To teach the foreign language and immerse students in
the foreign culture/country.
Linguae Mundi mainly uses the Communicative Language
Teaching approach. The teaching methods place a great
deal of emphasis on learners practising the foreign
language. The focus is on the spoken language,
especially speaking to one another. Language classes are
designed as adult immersion courses. Linguae Mundi
emphasises authentic language: words and structures to
be used in real-life situations. Lessons are studentcentred in which the learners do most of the talking and
are encouraged to engage with activities using the foreign


Required Skills

For Mandarin, French, German, and Spanish, language
tutors administer the AQA FCSE language exams in
autumn and spring. This requires additional duties
including planning and teaching lessons according to the
AQA syllabus, administration, exam invigilation
responsibilities, and moderating and marking exams.
Native or near-native (CEFR C1.2, IELTS 8) of one of the
following languages:
Arabic, Cantonese, Dutch, English, Finnish, French,
German, Greek, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean,
Mandarin, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish,
Swedish, Turkish
 Effective communication skills
 Speaking proficiently in their native language
 Interpersonal skills
 Working independently and within a team
 Ability to create or adapt language learning activities
and use teaching aids, such as realia (objects from
real life), hand-outs, audio-visual materials, and
PowerPoint support
 Ability to work with people from different cultures and
 Ability to simplify complex language sounds, concepts,
words and phrases
 Good organisational and prioritisation skills
 Willingness to undergo intensive language teacher
training, peer observations
 Ability to work evenings

Training is unpaid. Teaching hours (26 hours) are paid as
a monthly study grant (£12 per hour).
For Mandarin, French, German, and Spanish tutors only:
additional language exam-related hours outside of
teaching hours are unpaid, however reference is given
upon request to Linguae Mundi tutors

 Development of transferrable employability skills,

 Certificate issued by the Centre for Global
Engagement (CGE) in Foreign Language Teaching
 Successful completion of training, teaching and
assignments will lead to the EUROLTA certificate, a
European Certificate in Language Teaching to Adults
Linguae Mundi contract is a bursary and does not
constitute employee-employer relations. Linguae Mundi
does not sponsor visas (e.g. Tier 2 or Tier 4) to tutor
