Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel
of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the
seat of mockers. But his delight is in the law of the lord
and on his law he meditates day and night.
He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which
yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither.
Whatever he does prosper. (Ps 1:1-3)

INTRODUCTION
DAILY READ THE WORD OF GOD
“Day after day, from the first day to the last day,
Ezra read from the book of the law of God” (Nehemiah 8:18a)
The goal of this study is to encourage an orderly and methodic reading of
the word of God. The redeemed people of God in the Old Testament had to learn
after their coming out of the iron. Smelting furnace, out of Egypt (Deut 4:20;
1kgs 8:5) that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes
from the mouth of the lord (Deut 8:3 ; Math 4:4). Hence, God made this known
to them by feeding them with manna of which neither they nor their fathers
knew about.
Manna is the bread that God gave his people as food (Ex 16:15). It is also
called the bread from heaven (Jn 6:31) and the bread of angels (Ps 78:24-25 ;
Neh 9:15). This bread was particular because it had to be gathered daily
according to God’s specific instruction. “… each one is to gather as much as he
needs …” (Ex 16:15 – 16; Ex 16: 4; Num 11:7-9)
“Then the dew settled on the camp at night, the manna also came down”.
(Num 11:9)
“Each morning everyone gathered as much as he needed”. (Ex 16:4a)
Everybody had to put in this daily effort as long as he was strong and in
good heath and any negligence in obeying God’s instruction relative to manna
led to a calamity (Ex 16:17-20). In most cases, they that went against this
commandment came back empty handed (Ex 16:25-30). However, this divine
provision lasted for 40 years until the Israelites entered the promise land (Ex
16:35; Jn 5:9-12).

Today, we think that the word of God is and will remain the appropriate
food for the believer as long as he is on earth as it is in Ps 119:131 which says
that:
“I open my mouth and pant longing for your commands”.
1Pet 2:2 confirms this as it says: “like new born babies, crave pure
spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation”.
This bread is compared to Jesus Christ who declares he is “the mee bread
from heaven” (Jn 6:32-35) and the bread of life (Jn 6:47-51). This bread is
therefore the source of life (Jn 6:57; Ps 119: 92-93; Ps119:50; Ps 119:107), the
source of communion and intimacy (Jn 6:56).
Dear reader, anyone that eats this bread has the life of God and abides in
him. If you do this with discipline, you will not regret it.

CHAPTER ONE:
SOME EXPLANATIONS OF THE WORD “MEDITATION”

To meditate is to submit your spirit to reflections on a particular subject,
to consider with attention and interest a given act, event or situation (Ps 143:5).
In this case, the word of God is the subject of meditation (Josh 1:8 ; Ps 1:2).
The word “meditation” is used in various manners in the scriptures. In
effect, when we study the different variants of this word, it seems as if the word
meditation remains an unexploited domain for the believer today. As a result of
this, we are going to consider some passages in which this word has been used.
“Do not let this book of the law depart from your mouth; meditate on it
day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then
you will be prosperous and successful”. (Josh 1:8)
“But his delight is in the law of the lord, and on his law he meditates day
and night” (Ps 1:2).
“I lie awake thinking of you, meditating on you through the night”. (Ps
62:6 NLT).
“I remember the days of long ago, I meditate on all your works and
consider what your hands have done” (Ps 143:5).

Reflecting (imagining) on a subject.
The word “meditate” as used in the different passages above is derived
from the Hebrew word “HAGAH” which means to reflect on a subject,
attentively, consider etc. in other passages, the word ‘’HAGAH” has an
amplified sense which is translated as to imagine i.e. to represent object in your
spirit or call to mind images as will be seen in the scriptures below.
“Why do the heathen rage and the people imagine a vain thing?” (Ps 2:1
KJV).

10

“They also that seek after my life lay snares for me and they that seek my
hurt speak mischievous things and imagine deceits all the day long” (Ps 38:12
KJV).

To groan, to lament, to deplore.
In same passages, the word “HAGAH” means to groan, to lament, to
deplore, to weep and to express deep regrets with regards to something as in the
passages below:
“Therefore the Moabites wail, they wait together for Moab. Lament and
grieve for the men of Kir Hareseth” (Is 16:7).
“I cried like a swift or thrush, I moaned like a mourning dove. My eyes
grow weak as I looked to the heavens. I am hobbled; O Lord, come to my aid”
(Is 38:14).

To speak, to render praises
This same word in certain passages means to speak, to celebrate, to talk of
greatness and to render praises as used in the scriptures below:
“My tongue will speak of your righteousness and of your praises all day
long” (Ps 35:28).
“The mouth of the righteous man utters wisdom and his tongue speaks
what is just” (Ps 37:30).
“My mouth speaks what is true, for my lips detest wickedness. All the
words of my mouth are just; non of them is crooked or perverse. To the
discerning all of them are right; they are faultless to these who have
knowledge” (Prov 8:7-9).
Here, the particularity is that he that speaks as we can see speaks with
righteousness without mingling his words since he expresses himself to declare
the truth and not to please men. This kind of a person is not like some men since

11

it has to do with someone who has experience righteousness and has the fear of
God in his heart.

To commune, to converse.
In scripture, the word “meditate” is also derived from the Hebrew word
“SIACH” which means to commune, to converse, to pray, to prostrate and to
ponder over something.

The case where it means to commune.
“I call to remembrance my song in the night. I commune with mine own
heart and my spirit made diligent search” (Ps 77:6 KJV).

The case of speaking to the heart.
“In your anger do not sin, when you are on your beds, search your hearts
and be silent” (Ps 4:4).
“I lie awake thinking of you, meditating on you through the night” (Ps
63:6NLT).
“I lift up my hands to your commands, which I love and I meditate on
your decrees” (Ps 119:48).
“May the arrogant be put to shame for wronging me without cause; but I
will meditate on your precepts” (Ps 119:78).
“My eyes anticipate the night watches and I am awake before the cry of
the watchman, that I may meditate on your word” (Ps 119:147 AMP)

The case where it means to converse, to speak of a concert.
“the voices of the archers at the watering places. They recite the
righteous acts of the Lord, the righteous acts of warriors in Israel. Then the
people of the lord went down to the city gate” (Judg 5:11).

12

__________________________________________________________________________________

The case where it means to pray, to groan
“Evening and morning and at noon will I utter my complaint and moan
and sigh, and he will hear my voice” (Ps 55:17 AMP).
“May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing
in your sight, O lord, my rock and my redeemer” (Ps 19:14).
“He went out to the field one evening to meditate and as he looked up, he
saw camels approaching” (Gen 24:63).

The case where it means to talk
The word “SIACH” also means to speak in the following passages:
“Let me understand the teaching of your precepts, then I will meditate on
your wonders” (Ps 119:27).
“When you walk, they will guide you;
when you sleep, they will watch over you;
when you awake, they will speak to you” (Prov 6:22)

The case where it means to plan in advance
“Settle it therefore in your hearts, not to meditate before what you shall
answer” (Lk 21:14 KJV).

SUMMARY

Through these passages, we can therefore conclude that meditation is that
spiritual exercise through which the believer submits his spirit to reflections on
the word of God with the assurance that God will reveal himself, make himself
known and be discovered by he that sincerely search for him (Jer 20:13; Ps
145:18).
Through reflections on specific topics such as God, his goodness towards
men, Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit etc, the believer by the help of the word of
God and the HOLY SPIRIT (1Cor 2:9-12) comes into well understanding of
God’s will for his life. This discovery can lead to regrets causing groaning and
lamentations or joy which will cause celebration and praises to God.
This meditation after repentance will lead to an intimacy relationship with
God which will bring about communion. Thus, we cannot talk of communion
between two beings without mentioning conversation (prayer) because it is
through this means that the deep intentions of the soul are being expressed (to
speak from the heart).

CHAPTER TWO
THE IMPORTANCE OF MORNING DEVOTION

All the eminent men of God that we have known and read their
biographies had one thing in common which is that they started their day by
having morning pray and meditation. For example “Charles Simeon consecrated
to God his morning hours from 4 am to 8 am and John Wesley spent two hours
in prayers daily beginning from 4am”.
Why this particularity in the lives of these men?
This is because these morning hours have a great spiritual importance that
many people do not know, which is to their own disadvantage.
a) The hour of God’s visitation
In effect, the Bible seems to confirm the particularity of this hour and
according to Job the servant of God, God loves visiting every morning i.e. why
he said.
“What is man that you should manify him? And that you should set your
heart up on him? And that you should visit every morning” (Job 7:17-18a KJV).
Since God loves visiting every morning, do not miss your blessing because
of sleep.
b) The hour of God’s awakening
According to prophet Isaiah, this is the moment where God awakens his
own people so that they might hear his voice as in Isaiah 50:4b.
“He wakens me morning by morning, wakens my ears to listen like one
being thought”.

15

__________________________________________________________________________________

c) The hour of God’s warning
The prophet Jeremiah clearly shows us that this is the particular moment
where God gives warnings.
“I warned em again and again saying, obey me” (Jer 11:7b)

d) The hour that God speaks
According to prophet Jeremiah, it is at this moment that God speaks to us
and makes us to hear his voice.
“I spoke unto you, rising up early and speaking, but you heard not and I
called you, but you answered not” (Jer 7:13b KJV).

e) The hour during which God extends his goodness
This is what the psalmist reveal to us in the passage below:
“Cause me to hear your loving kindness in the morning, for in You I must”
(Ps 143:8a KJV).

f) The hour of instructions and directives
Besides showing us his goodness, God also gives directives at this hour.
“Cause me to know the way wherein I should walk; for I lift up my soul
unto You” (Ps 143: 8b KJV).

g) The hour where we gather the bread of life
In the desert, the bread of God (manna) had to be gathered every morning.
“Each morning everyone gathered as much as he needed” (Ex 16: 21a)
In the New Testament, Jesus Christ compares himself to the bread from
heaven.
“… then Jesus declared, I am the bread of life…” (Jn 6:32-35).

16

h) The hour of contact with God
In the same way Jesus Christ woke up in the morning, we can also notice
that, this moment of intimacy with God is a great source of blessing to those
who keep to it.
“Very early in the morning, while it was still day, Jesus got up, left the
house and went off to a solitary place where he prayed” (Mk 1:35).

THE TESTIMONIES OF GREAT MEN OF GOD
The men of God who have better expressed Christ in their character and
who greatly affected the world for him, were men who spent much time with
God to the extend where it became a major characteristic of their lives.
LUTHER: he spent his three best hours of the day praying and he said “if I
fail to spend two hours in prayers every morning, the devil takes the victory
during the day and I have so much work to accomplish to the point where I
cannot succeed without spending three hours in intercession everyday…”
(power by prayer E.M BOUNDS).
EARL CAIRNS: He woke up every morning at 6am, spent 1h30min on
prayer and bible study before leading the family service at 7:45am.
ADONIRAN Judson: The successes of Dr Judson in the work of God are
attributed to the fact he was spending much time with the Lord as a result, the
following is said of him:
Arrange your things so as to consecrate if possible two or three hours every
day not just for spiritual exercise, but to secret pray and communion with God.
Look for a way to escape seven times per day from work or company and lift up
your soul to the Lord.
Start your day by wakening up after midnight and consecrate sometime in
silence and darkness to this secret work. Let the sun at its rising met you at the
same work.

Let 9am, 10am, 12pm, 6pm and 9pm meet you in the same exercise. Be
decisive for this course and carryout all the necessary practical sacrifices to main
it. Consider that your time is short and do not allow work or company to rob
God (power by prayer E.M BOUNDS).
We are going to conclude with this important declaration of E.M
BOUNDS: “no man can accomplish a great and durable work for God if he is
not a man of prayer and no one can be a man of prayer if he does not put in
much time.

CHAPTER THREE:
MORNING PRAYER AND MEDITATION
“Oh, how I love your law! I meditate on it all day long” (Ps 119:97).
Morning prayer and the meditation of God’s word (Ps 119: 147 – 148) are
inseparable and has always characterized the life of great men of God of the lord
Jesus, it is said that:
“Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the
house and went to a solitary place where he prayed” (Mk 1:35).
The life of Jesus was characterized by prayer (Mk 6:46, Lk 9:28 etc) and
that is why the author of the epistle of Hebrew tells us that during his life and
ministry on earth, he depended on prayer despite the fact that he was the son of
God (Heb 5:7-9).
With regards to the time to be spent in the morning with God, certain men
of God have gone right to the point of talking about spending the tithe of your
time with God i.e. 2h40min.
With all these experiences, we cannot deny the fact that this morning hours
spent with God have great benefits in the life of those who are faithful in it and
we don’t want to be left out.

CHAPTER FOUR
THE ESSENCE OF THE WORD OF GOD
“You have laid precepts that are to be fully obeyed” (Ps 119:4).

The word of God was given so that it should be fully obeyed (Ps 119:4) and
God(s desire is that it should be a guard for the believer (Ps 119:9), a means of
sanctification (Ps 119:10) and a way to maintain communion with God by living
in holiness (Ps 119:101 ; Ps119:104). Hence, the will of God that it should be a
source of inspiration and meditation for the believer i.e. a real counselor
(Ps119:57 ; Ps 119:24). Thus the word of God will intend bring to us numerous
blessing such as wisdom (Ps119:98), revelation (Ps119:130) and prosperity
(Ps119:92-93; Josh 1:8-9)

CHAPTER FIVE
HOW TO APPROACH THE WORD OF GOD
“I rise before down and cry for help, I have put my hope in your word. My
eyes stay open through the watches of the night, that I may meditate on your
promises” (Ps 119:147-148).

A- BY SETTING APART A TIME
It is very important for me to say again that it takes serious discipline to set
apart a time for God and respect it because experience has shown that we can
never have too much time for God (Ps119:147-148).

B- BY PRAYERS
“Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law” (Ps119:18)
The best way to come close to the word of God is through prayer
(Ps119:28) because through this means, the believer expresses his desire to
know the will of God and the ways of God (Ps119:27 ; Ps119:36-37). Through
prayers, the believer will ask from God the necessary ability to understand his
word (Ps119:125; Ps119:133-134). The believer will also chose a particular time
for the reading and meditation of the word of God (Ps 119:147-148) and this
particular moment depends on each individual since the organization of our time
differs.

C- BY TAKING THE WORD OF GOD
“I lift up my lands to yours commands which I love and I meditate on your
decrees” (Ps 119:48).
After having gotten direction from God through prayers for his meditation,
the believer gets hold of the word of God i.e. the bible (Ps119:48). Besides

21

To meditate your word of (Pastor NWAY Roger Carl)
__________________________________________________________________________________

setting a time early in the morning to encounter God through his word
(Ps119:148) the believer needs discipline and perseverance in order to succeed.

D- BY READING THE WORD OF GOD
“Day after from the first to the last day Ezra read from the book of the law
of God” (Neh 8:18a).
The reading of the word of God is an important spiritual activity in the life
of a child of God since it is necessary for his edification and growth. In other to
succeed in this domain, the believer must be rigorous, discipline and methodic in
the reading of the word of God hence, the reading of the word of God must be
daily, weekly, monthly and annually as in Deut 17:19 which states that:
“It is to be with him, and he is to read it all the days of his life so that he
may learn to revere the Lord his God and follow carefully all the words of this
law and these decrees”.

E- BY PRACTICING THE WORD OF GOD
“I have kept my feet from every evil path so that I might obey your word”
(Ps119:101).
The practicing of the word of God is the source of all life (Lev18:5;
Neh9:29; Rom10:5 and Gal 3:12), the source and prove of wisdom (Matt 7:24),
the prove that we belong to the spiritual family of Jesus Christ (Lk8:4) and the
prove of a life of justice (Rom 2:13).
“Do not merely listen to the word and so deceive yourselves. Do what it
says” (Jam 1:22).
When studying and meditating the word of God, ask yourselves the
following questions:
1) Have I learn something new concerning;
i. The person and the work of God the father?
ii. The person and work of Jesus Christ the son of God?
22

To meditate your word of (Pastor NWAY Roger Carl)
__________________________________________________________________________________

iii. The person and work of the holy spirit?
2) Is there:
i. Any promise for me to claim by faith?
ii. Any sin against which I should be careful?
iii. Any order which I must obey?
iv. Answer to a biblical or personal question?
v. Any word for the day?

3) Can I remember other verses in the bible that resembles what I
am just from reading?
4) How can I enrich my prayer of today by being inspired from
the truths I have received?
You need to work your mind through this exercise and in order to know the
bible, you need to keep it in your heart as Ps119:11 says.
“I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you”.
However, during your study of the word of God, you need to learn by heart
the verse of the day i.e. the verse that caught your attention the most. Also while
reading, use a pencil to underline in your bible the words, phrases or verses that
spoke to you personally.
Note in your book or reflection jotter the thoughts and the questions or
answers that the text is suggesting.
Use a method
If you read the bible without following a plan, you might end up reading
the same verses or the passages that you like and as a result of this, you will
never read the whole bible. That is why, there is a proposed bible reading plan in
the passages ahead. The particularity of this plan is the fact that it covers the
whole and if you do not have enough time you can use this same plan to read the
bible in three years by simply reading one chapter daily.

CHAPTER SIX
SOME PRACTICAL ADVISE

1- Set aside a time for an encounter with God i.e. make out time to be
alone with God. Experience has shown that it is not early done alone
and in addition to this, you need to chose a precise moment to read and
meditate the word of God (Ps 119:147-148).
2- Ask God for the understanding of his word (Ps 119:18) and for the
necessary ability to know his ways (Ps 119:27-28; Ps 119:36-37).
3- After having asked for wisdom and direction through prayers from God
for the meditation of his word, get the text of the day and read it
(Ps119:48).
4- You need to read the bible text attentively, many times and if possible,
make some comparisms with other translations of the bible to better
understand the text (Neh8:8).
5- You need to underline, note the words and phrases that caught your
attention. In addition, you need to retain the reflections, the thoughts
and God’s answers to yours questions. After having done this, you need
to ask yourself the questions behind.

CHAPTER EIGHT

CONCLUSION

With the enlightment of what has been said, we can therefore conclude that
the meditation of the word of God plays a vital rule is the spiritual development
and growth of the child of God (Ps 119:97; 1Pet 2:1-2). Thus, a regular and
disciplined practice of this spiritual exercise is vital in the growth process of a
child of God (Ps 119:4; Ps119:9; Ps119:101; Ps119:104).
Any progress or success in this domain will be the fruit of a life that is
marked with seriousness and rigour in the following domains.
 Time management
 The place of encounter with God
 A disciplined and methodic reading of the word of God
 Obedience and the practice of the word of God
Unless a Christian child pays this price, he is wasting time and heading to
his own spiritual ruin (1Cor 9:24-27; Phil 3:8-14). In addition to this, the lord
Jesus Christ said it himself in the following words: “man does not live on bread
alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of God” (Matt 4:4; Deut8:3;
Is55:3).
All those who have become children of God by faith through the
redemptive work of Jesus Christ on the cross of Calvary, needs to know the
following:
1) The knowledge of the word of God is not just the source of life but it
renders wise the ignorant and this wisdom will later lead to salvation
(Matt 4:4 ; 2Tim 3:15).
2) It grants us sanctification and preserves us from sin (Ps 119:11).
3) It produces spiritual growth in us (1Pet 2:2).

4) It produces a victorious and successful Christian life (Josh 1:7-8).
5) Those who receive deep revelation from the lord are those who have
build much intimacy with God (Jn13:21-30).
6) The superficial believer cannot know the heart beat of God, his joy, his
pains, his groaning etc (1Cor 2:14).
7) It is only the man that gets close to God through prayers and the
meditation of his word that can experience such intimacy (1Cor 2:9-12).
By virtue of the blood of Jesus, we have free access into the sanctuary of
God’s presence (Heb 10:19). As a result, we can enter his presence at all times
without fear (Heb 2:14-18; Heb 4:14-16).
May the Lord help us in Jesus’ name.
