The activities
This week, some students of ESIAB have participated in an intensive
week of English. There were ten students of first year to improve
their English through various activities around performing arts. They
worked with Clarence, an Australian director, and Laurence Koch,
their English teacher. The main goal of this intensive week is to
exchange in English. Students participated in various activities…
The objective was to shoot well-known film scenes at the end of the
week. Firstly they did a lot of warm-up exercises.

Laurence Koch

For example, the director gave us
instructions to act in order to work
with a team spirit. Here is a photo
where we have to make a ship
and the statue of liberty together
or other things…

We
also
did
other
exercises in order to
improve our voice and
our acting. For example
we had to shout as if we
were dying.
Sometimes,
we
worked
together
with our teacher on
a newspapers to do
some articles about
our intensive week,
our activities, our
feelings,
an
interview
of
Clarence,

We did a speed-dating to inhabit
the bodies of any characters and
improved
our
improvisation.
Moreover the goal was to listen to
the others, and have a good eye
contact and speak louder.

Who is Clarence ?
Her debuts
Clarence was born in Rochefort, she tried to become an actress after high school. She did
several small jobs as a waitress, or she worked in a bakery.
She was a single mum so she had to work to earn money.
She started directing at drama school. She was at university for 4 years when she learned to
practice in actress roles or write scenes.
During her career she appeared on TV, she was an actress and she had small roles in movies.
She worked by herself. That's what made her strength, she knew how to manage on her own.
Her best memory of childhood was to see a man fishing in the harbor where her parents had a
shop and especially walking along the harbor and smelling the fish
Her favorite trip was Vietnam because the people, despite poverty, were truly human. She
remembers being aboard a small boat on the Viet Cong River.
Her dream job would have been to become a pilot during World War Two to kill the enemy. She
took some flying lessons but is not yet able to fly alone.

And after that?
This week with Clarence, we spoke in
English and shot scenes. We did a lot of
activities in group like improvisation or
speaking… The goal was to exchange in
English.
Clarence had explained that it was “an
opportunity to learn a language, to fix
us, to touch us.” From her point of view,
when we speak another language we
are another person. In fact, a language
includes a way of thinking and a culture.
Speaking English is always a positive
experience.
This week we tried to acquire an organic
language. We didn’t shoot outdoors
because of the wind but we will work
inside, at ESIAB.

And now?
Clarence has lived in Brest for ten years. She has one child, a girl, who was born in Australia.
She works in the performing industry; she is a director and an actress. Clarence has a Theater
company: “Théâtre d’ici et là”. Since her arrival in Brest, Clarence Sophie Dany has taught
theater in various institutions, including “La Maison du Théâtre”, “Université de Bretagne
Occidentale” et la “ Maison des jeunes et de la culture de l’Harteloire”
In everyday life, she finds inspiration in books of science fiction or fantasy. When she has the
time, she likes watching movies. She is keen on reading books. Like everybody, she loves to see
her family and go out with her friends.
Today, she is in Brest with her husband who is a real Breton. Her daughter no longer lives with
her. Her husband does not want to leave Brittany so Clarence stays in Brest but she would prefer
to live in Paris, because Brest is not a city of art and entertainment (there is not as much money
for artists as in Paris). Even if Brittany is not very good for her trade, she loves a lot of things in
this region like the seafood or the people (who, according to her, are very helpful). But, she
doesn't like a famous specialty of Brittany: crêpes.

History of movies
The history of film began in the
1890s
When motion picture cameras were
invented by the French brothers Louis and
Auguste Lumière and film production
companies started to be established.
Because of the limits of technology, the
films of the 1890s were under a minute
long. The first two films were “La sortie
d’usine” and “L’arrivée du train à la gare”
by the Lumière brothers.

Lumière brothers

Until 1927

Special effects

Motion pictures were produced
without sound. The films became a
few minutes long consisting of
several shots. “The first film
studios were built in 1897. Special
effects were introduced and film
continuity, involving action moving
from one sequence into another,
began to be used.” by Global
Movies.

In the 1900s
Continuity
of
action
across
successive shots was achieved and
the first close-up shot was
introduced.

How to act and preparation to get ready
If you’re an actor who is new to the stage, and you get cast in a show, you may start
rehearsals. With the idea in mind that once you are cast, you want to show up
prepared and ready to work, here’s a checklist for what you need to do to be ready for
that first day of rehearsal.

READING THE PLAY THREE TIMES

SLEEPING

First, reading is devoted to understanding
the plot, getting to know who the
characters are, getting, place and action.
Second, reading focuses on getting to
know everything you possibly can about
the character you are playing. What
information you are given about your
character in stage directions, their
dialogue, from the evidence the playwright
gives you, create your character in every
manner possible.
Third, reading consists of reading the play
in an attempt to see how your character
fits within the entire thematic context and
dramatic action of the play. Why your
character in the play is and what purpose
do they serve?

The night before the audition, gather
any materials you may require to bring
with you. Get to bed early in order to
be well-rested for the day ahead.

DON’T BE SHY
Allow friends, colleagues to watch your
performance before to your audition.
Performing is a skill that takes a lot of
practice. The more often you perform,
the less nervous you will be each time
and honest, constructive criticism is
gold-dust.

READ THE PLAY MANY TIMES
When you read a script, read every
word. No matter what your role is in a
play you must read the script many
times. Read the play from beginning to
end. And, because it's a play, it's not a
bad idea to read it aloud.
We are acting together, that’s fun!

How to make a film

7 questions for director CLARENCE SOPHIE
DANY

What are the main people involved while making a film?
“There are different jobs on a film set, there’s of course the director who works… Depending on the
type of director they are, but in my case I like to work with the actors, I like to direct very much the
performance. There is somebody who is in charge of the camera, the “cinematographer”, and they’re
more inclined to look for how to shoot the action, what needs to be in it visually, then there’s
somebody who’s in charge of the continuity (if you move your hand in one way it needs to be the
same each time you do it) who will take lots of photos all the way through. There is somebody on the
script who is constantly making sure that the text is being correctly said and also where we are in the
day, whether we are on schedule, is usually the person who is in charge of the production “production
manager” with an assistant. There is a lighting designer, who is in charge of making sure that the
faces are lit. And also the sound engineer to make sure that we hear everything and who considers
the extra sounds that might be in the environment and that needs to be captured. Finally the costume
designer and the set designer.”

How much time do you spend directing
a short movie?

For you, what is the job of a film
director?

“There are different types of short films, but a
short film under 10 minutes, it can take already
a year to write, maybe less, it depends really
what every director has as other projects on
the boil. So it’s never really just the single and
only thing that they’re doing. Already it might
take a good year for the text to be really good,
that it’s had qualified people that have read it
and find the next process to get funding and
while you are doing the final rewrite you are
also looking for funding and that can take even
another year. So it usually takes about 2 years
before you can start acting.”

“For me what makes a film director is somebody
who shows the story as opposed to telling it, a
film is a visual medium it’s not a textual, word
medium, is about showing everything, not telling
it.”

Clarence is
shooting
Safaa who
is acting

Is it difficult to direct actors?
“Real actors tend to be people who are very
open and in need of direction, so I wouldn’t say
it’s difficult to direct actors. What’s difficult is
finding the right approach for each individual,
because you can’t direct actors the same way,
no two human beings are the same. So you
need to find what it is on a human level that
makes that actor tick and how to inspire them, I
don’t find it difficult but I work very hard to
understand the story and the characters, so that
when I choose the person I choose perfectly.
Casting is very, very important.”
Do you need a lot of equipment to shoot a
short movie?
“Yes, even a short film, budget can go up 15
000 euros to make a short film, and that’s not
even paying the actors and the film director,
just for equipment. It costs a lot.”

What do you focus on while shooting a
movie?

Which advice could you give to a young
director?
“Live, make mistakes, suffer, be really openminded, travel, read a lot, look at lots of
films, have something to say about life.”

By Safaa Benmoussa and Marie Vasseur

“Every director is different, I tend to enjoy
writing and creating the story so I’m very
interested in making sure that the world that I
want to create happens, I’m more an actors
director, I’m very very much involved in
getting the right performance.
It depends on who the director is, what film
you’re making because it depends on the story
and what you need to concentrate on more.”

FSEL: Five Strategies for Effective
How can students learn how
to study? You will find the solution here, and it is
Learning
miraculous!

Many strategies have supporting evidence from cognitive psychology. For each
chosen strategy, we will explain how to proceed and some points to consider. You
can choose the one that best suits you.

SPEED PRACTICE

INTERLEAVING
Switch between ideas during
a study session. Do not study one
idea for too long. Go back over the
ideas again in different orders to
strengthen your understanding.
Make links between different ideas
as you switch between them.
While it is good to switch between
ideas, do not switch too often, or
spend too little time on any
One idea; you need to make sure
you understand them. Interleaving
will feel harder than studying the
same thing for a long time. But do
not worry - this is actually helpful
to your learning!

In this strategy, you have to start
planning early your exams, and set aside a
little bit of time every day. Five hours spread
out over two weeks is better than the same
five hours all once. It is necessary to review
information from each class, but not
immediately after class. After you review
information from the most recent class, make
sure to go back and study important older
information to keep it fresh. When you sit
down, make sure you are using effective
study strategies rather than just rereading
your class notes. This may seem difficult and
you may forget some, information from day to
day, but this is actually a good thing! This
forces you to retrieve information from
memory.

ELABORATION

CONCRETE EXAMPLES

Ask yourself questions while you are
studying about how things work and why, and
then find the answers in your class materials
and discuss them with your classmates. As
you elaborate, make connections between
different ideas to explain how they work
together.
Take two ideas and think of ways they are
similar and different. Describe how the ideas
you are studying apply to your own
experiences or memories. As you go through
your day, make connections to the ideas you
are learning in class.
Make sure the way you are explaining and
describing an idea is accurate. Do not
overextend the elaborations, and always
check your class materials or ask your
teacher.
Work your way up so that you can describe
and explain without looking at your class
materials.

Collect
examples
your
teacher has used, and look in your
class
materials
for
as
many
examples as you can find. Make the
link between the idea you are
studying and each example, so that
you understand how the example
applies to the idea. Share examples
with friends, and explain them to
each other for added benefits.
You may find examples on the
internet
that
are
not
used
appropriately. Make sure your
examples are correct - check with
your teacher. Ultimately, creating
your own relevant examples will be
the most helpful for learning.

DUAL CODING
Look at your class materials and find

to the words. Look at visuals, and explain
in your own words what they mean.
Take information that you are trying to

Try to come up with different ways to
represent the information visually, for

I think it depends on the person. I used
this strategy because I know how to plan.
It is important to read this article and
reflect on the strategy that best suits us.
For example: A person who has a lot of
imagination may prefer to choose the
strategy with concrete examples.

What strategy did you choose and
why?

Has this new strategy worked?
Yes, it was miraculous. I increased
my marks by 3 points! My mother
finally decided to offer me a car
for my efforts. I am free, I can go
wherever I want. No, let’s be
serious, I find that I remember

I decided to learn to study using Spaced

Interview students

3 students are interviewed about this week by Rémi Biason
Marie Vasseur

Marion Burlot

Safaa Benmoussa

We are working for one week together, and I want to know how you
appreciate this week?
I really enjoy this week
because it’s a good way
to learn English. It’s a
new method and I like it.

I really appreciate this week
although at the beginning I was
defeatist. Six hours of English
per day have passed relatively
fast.

I really appreciate this
week, at first I thought it
would be difficult but I
realized after that it was so
good.

Do you think you’ve bettered your English since Monday?
Yes, I learnt a lot of
vocabulary
with
improvisation.
I
learnt
vocab with warm-ups and
different scenes which we
played. I improved my
pronunciation too.

I would not say that I have
improved my English a lot. But
now, I am not scared any more.
What I've learned is nobody is
perfect, even if you make some
mistakes about grammar and
pronunciation, the main thing is
to be understood and we can start
again.

Yes, I feel that my
English has improved a
lot since Monday.

Clarence, an Australian performing artist, came here to help us to progress in
English. Do you think her strategy is beneficial?
I think it is. It’s a playful
way to learn. We can
remember the lessons and
the new words more easily.

I’m convinced that yes! It's so
funny and nice to learn this way.
I loved all the little preparation
exercises and I felt like I was
discovering myself.

Yes, I think so. It is a good
strategy because we learnt
by doing activities and
normal acts and that helps
as a lot to be more
comfortable while talking in
English.

If you had to choose another way to improve your English performance, how
would you make this week?
I would watch many movies
and listen to an English radio
station. To my mind, series
in OV as Games of Thrones
or Grey’s Anatomy. I want to
improve my English without
knowing I’m working.

Truly, I do not think there is
another
way
to
improve
because it's really playful, I did
not have the impression to
work arduously.

I can't find another way
better than this.

If you had to describe this week in one word. Which word would you choose?

Tours last Sunday.

The team from the center of France started the match the
best way.

They scored a try after only 7’. Plouzané tried to react but they found a great
defense. However, the blue & white team of Plouzané came back two times again
into the field of Tours and won 2 penalties. The bretons converted these 2 penalties
into 6 points thanks to Jacquard’s kick and it was 6 – 7 for Tours, 5 minutes before
half time.
During these 5 minutes, the players in orange & blue from Tours came into
Plouzané’s field and scored a last try before half time, by Poloni. After 40 minutes,
there was 6 – 14, for Tours.

The second half was a show of force by Tours.

The team assaulted Plouzané and inflicted 2 other tries whereas Plouzané only one
by Poloni again.

The final score reflects the game

Tours dominated Plouzané and won the right to believe in moving up division.
Plouzané will have to be patient at least until next year.

Summer Steps for Healthy Living
In the warmer, longer, lazier days of summer, life may not be easy, but your life probably
feels less chaotic. Even adults tend to adopt a "school's out!" attitude in summer. That's
why this is a perfect time to improve your health in a fashion so seasonally laid back you'll
barely notice the effort.
We went to ten health experts in fields such as diet, fitness, stress. We asked them this: If
you could only suggest one simple change this season to boost personal health, what would
it be? Here are their top ten tips.

Give your

If you do one thing this
summer to improve your

which may help prevent

Traveling around the world

Here they are: ten super
simple ways to boost your
health this summer. Try one
or try them all!

Be good to your
eyes

Pick one outdoor activity -going on a hike, taking a
nature walk, cycling or
swimming - to shed that
cooped-up feeling of gym
workouts.

To protect your vision at
work and at play, wear
protective
eyewear.
When outdoors, wear
sunglasses that block at
least 99% of ultraviolet A
and B rays. Sunglasses
can
help
prevent
cataracts, as well as
wrinkles around the eyes.

Floss daily

Speak
often !

Flossing
reduces
oral
bacteria, which improves
overall body health, and if
oral bacteria is low, your
body has more resources to
fight bacteria elsewhere.

English

Watch TV shows, read
books and create your
own dictionary. It will
help you for your next
English lessons or for
your
TOEIC…
Don’t
worry: practicing English
is just about having fun!

Sleep well
Resist the urge to stay up
later during long summer
days. Instead pay attention
to good sleep hygiene by
keeping the same bedtime.

Alcohol: go lite
A sangria (table wine diluted
with juice), a cold beer, or a
wine
spritzer
are
all
refreshing but light.

Vacation time !
Vacations
have
multiple
benefits: They can help lower
your blood pressure, heart
rate, and stress hormones
such
as
cortisol,
which
contributes to a widening
waist and an increased risk
of heart disease.

Stress less
To improve your stress
level, plant a small garden,
cultivate a flower box, or if
space is really limited,
plant a few flower pots.

Film review
Baywatch

The director wants to shoot a parody of the
eponym 90’s series: Baywatch. It is not a
great success, despite featuring the famous
Zac Efron and Dwayne Johnson. This film
can disturb by its lack of ambition, indeed,
most of the jokes are schoolkid level and
below the belt. Without dialogue, Zac Efron,
is a hideous Olympic athlete recycled as
lifeguard. These two actors and “bimbos”
cannot save the film from drowning.
You mustn’t see it, 1.5/5
Director: Seth Gordon
Casting: Dwayne Johnson, Zac Efron,
Alexandra Daddario, Priyanka Chopra, Kelly
Rohrbach

HhHH

(2017)
It is an excellent movie on an exciting subject.
The film is mastered and well interpreted.
HHhH,""Himmlers
Hirn
heißt
Heydrich""
(Himmler's brain is called Heydrich) is a
thrilling and captivating historical biopic. We
can finally see the story of men and women
who are not super Hollywood heroes but
opponents of Nazism and contributed to the
fall of fascism. The plot introduces serious
themes that impose a true reflection on the
man who was responsible for so much
radicality and so many horrors: Reinhard
Heydrich. Executions and revenge multiply and
operate at every corner. In a second part, the
film also focuses on the resistance and those
designated to try to assassinate this awful
person. The result is both poignant and
upsetting.

You must see it 4.5/5
Director: Cédric Jimenez
Casting: Jason Clarke (Reinhard Heydrich),
Rosamund
Pike
(Lina
Heydrich),
Jack
O'Connell (Jan Kubis)…

Thomas Pesquet’s
incredible drift

Knowing that hundreds of fungi
disappeared from the fungi collection
after the Open day, this is quite
shocking! The police is investigating
this strange disappearance. According
to our sources, it could have been
stolen by a first-year student or a
visitor. It could be a disaster if fungi
were spread across Brittany.

After a selfie which went wrong,
Thomas drifted 6 miles away from
the International Space Station.
Indeed, the young astronaut was
projected by a rubble in space
when he was taking a photo for
his Facebook page. The photo was
posted
with
the
hashtag
#Lostinspace which helped his
colleagues to actively look for him.
The rescue team is currently doing
their best to bring him back safe
and sound.

An unhabited planet

A NASA exploration discovered a
new form of life on planet Venus.
This form of life is going to be
brought back to Earth to study
more carefully. This life is very
similar to insects, same shape and
organization. This discovery opens
possibilities for colonizing this
planet.

Dinosaurs have not
disappeared.

Contrary
to
what
scientists
thought,
dinosaurs
did
not
disappear after a climatic disaster
but they became microscopic.
Indeed, new research has been
able to find them in very remote
areas of civilization. This discovery
questions the whole classification
of living beings.
