Val d’Isère is renowned as Europe’s most popular ski destination. However, not everyone
realises that it’s a resort of two seasons. Visitors from around the world who gather each
winter can have just as much fun in the mountains here in summer. You can even ski, if
Val d’Isère has its own Pissaillas glacier where winter
continues above 3000m for 12 months of the year.
Three chair and surface lifts are open for skiing each
morning from June 10 to July 16, subject to weather
In July and August the average daytime temperature is over 25°C, perfect for sunbathing
and not too hot for hiking, biking, and the host of other sporting activities on offer in this
glorious setting on the edge of the Vanoise National Park. There’s lots to do and loads to
see between now and September 1.
Instead of the 30-minute winter journey up from the
hamlet of Le Fornet by cable car and gondola, you can
either drive or take the bus to the foot of the glacier. It’s
a great way to spend a morning.

Ski only: 29,50€, child and senior 24€
HIKING AND BIKING
Whether you plan to walk or wheel, the lifts are open free of
charge from July 1 to August 27. Le Lac de L’Ouillette is a great
family destination for a day out in the sunshine. This Alpine lake
is in a beautiful setting above the village at 2500m, perfect for a
family picnic or a lazy lunch on the restaurant terrace, drinking
in the spectacular mountain views. This summer sees the
opening of a new children’s play area.

ROAD OR MOUNTAIN
Val d’isère is one of the best locations in the Alps for road and
mountain biking, and has already established itself as a popular
centre for Europe’s fastest-growing sports activity – e-biking.
At 2770m, the Col de l’Iseran is the highest paved road in Europe,
surrounded by the glaciers of Val d’Isère and the Vanoise National Park.
It’s also an epic climb of the Tour de France. The road opens to summer
traffic – snow clearance permitting – on June 15.
August 15 is a special day here, with a trout-fishing competition open to all. The annual L’Ouillette Festival takes
place on August 20.
On Sunday, June 25 the whole road is closed to traffic, allowing
cyclists to freely climb the 920m from the resort to the top of the pass
before the downhill descent back to Val, or down to the pretty village
of Bonneval-sur-Arc in the Maurienne Valley.
On July 1 and 2 the road is also the setting for the second Chamois Reborn
motorcycle festival. Last summer some 500 bikers with vintage machines
from all over the world gathered in Val to re-enact a mass climb to the top
stunts, demonstrations, a rock concert - and a giant tartiflette.

ELECTRIC AND HYBRID VEHICLE SHOW
HIGH TRAIL VANOISE BY ODLO
July 13 to 16, 2017
The leading show in the Alps for alternative energy in
transport is back this summer with around 100 brands
showcasing some remarkable innovations. It’s expected
to attract some 15,000 visitors.
This is a wonderful opportunity to explore the potential
of driverless cars by seeing them in action. The show is by
no means confined to the four-wheel revolution with the
latest in e-bikes and e-motorbikes on display as well as all
kinds of offbeat innovations.
July 7 to 9, 2017
What’s more, you can try them out for yourself on
dedicated all-terrain test tracks that are an important
feature of the show. For e-car and e-bike enthusiasts, you
can take a test drive up the Col de l’Iseran.
Lace up your running shoes and get ready for one of the biggest
events in the trail-running calendar. This year, the tough, but
dramatically beautiful Val d’Isère course forms part of the European
Skyrunning Championships. There’s a choice of routes for all levels.
The Vertical Kilometre, Friday, July 7
The Face de Bellevarde is considered by World Cup ski racers to be
one of the toughest downhills in the world – only this time it’s being
raced in reverse. The uphill event, first run in 2014, is a highlight of
the Skyrunning circuit. The pro-am contestants start at 30 seconds
intervals from the base station of the Olympique gondola, choosing
individual lines up the various tracks and paths that crisscross La
High Trail Vanoise, Saturday, July 8
At 70km and 5400m of vertical, this is the ultimate mountain trail,
with scenery that takes your breathe away: the top of the Grande
Motte at 3656m, the Lost Valley, the Grande Sassière Nature
Le Trail des 6 Cols, Saturday, July 8
At 39km and 3200m of vertical, this route is also just as scenic as
the High Trail Vanoise and not to be underestimated. It takes you to
six peaks and the Grand Pissaillas glacier, l’Aiguille Pers at 3386m
or the original path of the Leissières tunnel.
Les Balcons de Val d’Isère, Sunday, July 9
This challenge of 19km and 1000m of vertical takes you to the
hamlet of Le Fornet and on up to the Lac de l’Ouillette. Even
children aged from seven years can get a taste for the sport on the
Trail Jeunes on the Sunday. www.high-trail-vanoise.com
L'AVALINE SAVOYARD FAIR
LE PARC NATIONAL DE LA VANOISE
August 5 and 6
This traditional Savoyard fair is being held for the 13th
consecutive year, with exhibitors from every corner of
the Savoie and from the neighbouring region of Piedmont
across the Italian frontier. What they bring with them
includes everything from regional culinary produce such
as cheeses, jams, charcuterie, honey, and wine to paintings
and other works of art.
In times gone by, such fairs were important trading events
between Savoie and Piedmont. L’Avaline brings this
tradition back to life. It’s also a family festival with loads
of entertainment and music for children and adults alike
This giant nature reserve on the edge of Val d’Isère is yours to explore, with wild flowers and animals in their natural habitat. Hopefully you’ll come across marmots and mountain goats, along with
herds of chamois and eagles in full flight. It’s a truly wonderful
place for hiking.
Take a guide for a day or half-day, or spend a night in hut an hour’s
hike from the village. Discover the local flora and fauna on a guided
tour on Wednesday July 12,19 and August 16,2017. c
LE CENTRE AQUASPORTIF
Val d’Isère’s swimming pool complex also houses an aquagym and
wellness area with sauna, hammam and hot tubs as well as treatment
rooms. There’s also a fully equipped gym and a squash court along
with golf and driving simulators, and a 200sq m climbing wall.
Sports parks in the village centre and in the Vallée du Manchet offer
a range of sporting activities and fun for all ages. These include
tennis, trampoline, archery, laser biathlon, golf, football, riding, and
orienteering. Come and meet the team at 18.00 each Sunday and
decide what to do.
BIKE PARK "VAL D'ISÈRE - TIGNES"
