May 2017: Agri-food exports bounce
back above average values
After a dip in April, the monthly value of EU agrifood exports rebounded in May 2017 and
reached a value of EUR 11.5 billion, which is
EUR 923 million (+9%) higher than in May 2016,
and 15% higher than the 4-year average.
Highest increases in monthly export values (May
2016 compared to May 2017, EUR million) were
recorded for the US (+122), China (+105),
Japan (+88), Hong Kong (+79), Russia (+75)
and Korea (+71). Monthly exports (EUR million)
fell significantly to Morocco (-80) for a 2nd consecutive month, Algeria (-37) and Egypt (-33).
By sector, the highest export growth came in
wine, (EUR +185 million), infant food, fatty

acids, and milk powders. Wheat exports
dropped for a 3rd month (EUR -246 million), and
exports of pork and other cereals also fell.
Monthly values for EU agri-food imports also
increased in May 2017 compared to the year
before (EUR +1 247 million; +13%). Imports in
value terms from US, Indonesia, Ukraine and
Australia increased most, while imports from
Brazil, Ghana and Cameroon went down most.
Major increases were seen in oilseeds and palm
oil for the 2nd month, as well as for tropical fruit
and unroasted coffee. Imports of cocoa beans
decreased most in value terms.
Following an increase in exports and a higher
increase in imports, the net trade balance in
May 2017 continued to be positive at a total of
EUR +675 million.

Exports to China, USA, Japan and
Korea driving EU agri-food exports

EU agri-food imports
also increasing

For the 12-months period June 2016 to May
2017, EU agri-food exports reached a value of
EUR 131.8 billion, corresponding to a sustained
increase by 2.6% in value terms compared to
the same period one year ago.

Agri-food imports from third countries in the 12months period June 2016 to May 2017
accounted for over EUR 115 billion, i.e. an
increase by 1.5% compared to the same period
one year ago. Nevertheless, driven by the strong
export performance, the export surplus for the
12-months period amounts to EUR 16.8 billion
(+11%).

Major gains in annual values are being achieved
in agri-food exports to China (EUR +683 million;
+6%) and the US (EUR +678 million; +3%).
Further annual increases are being recorded in
agri-food exports to Korea (EUR +658 million)
and to Japan (EUR +605 million). Increased
exports to Vietnam (EUR +339 million) Russia
(EUR +312 million, for non-banned products)
and Israel (EUR +236 million) have also being
taking place in the last twelve-month period.
Annual export values remain down for North
African and Middle East destinations, such as
Egypt (EUR -546 million; -27%), Algeria (EUR 415 million; -14%) and Saudi Arabia (EUR 358 million; -7%), though in May 2017 exports
to the latter grew by EUR +26 million (+8%).
Despite a reduction in pig meat exports in the
March-May 2017 period, export performance
increased significantly over the last twelve
months
(EUR +794 million; +17%).
Other
product categories that are performing well
include wine (EUR +758 million; +7%), infant
food (EUR +757 million; +12%), meat offal
(EUR +488 million; 19%)
and
cigars
and
cigarettes (EUR +382 million; +12%).
Wheat and other cereals exports experience
the biggest drop on an annual base (EUR 1.0 billion;-18% and EUR 776 million, -30%,
respectively). Only two other categories, namely
raw hides and skins (EUR -259 million; -13%)
and eggs and honey (EUR 131 million; -17%)
recorded notable losses in export values over the
last 12 months, though wool and silk
registered a high percentage fall (-22%).

Extraction date for statistics: 12/07/2017

Main origins for EU agri-food imports over the
past 12 months were Brazil (EUR 12.0 billion),
United States (EUR 11.3 billion), Argentina
(EUR 5.9 billion) and China (EUR 5.2 billion),
followed by Switzerland, Indonesia, Turkey and
Ukraine around EUR 4 billion each.
On the year-on-year basis, the value of agri-food
imports from top four importers went down.
Imports from Brazil by EUR -641 million or -5%
and from the United States decreased by EUR
-256 million, (-2%). For Argentina the decrease
is smaller at -1%. For other key partners, there
were significant percentage reductions, such as
from Turkey (-9%),New Zealand (-8%), Chile
(-4%) and Malaysia (-3%).
On the other hand, Indonesia increased most
significantly (EUR +615 million, +15%). Over
the 12 months period, EU import values for agrifood products also went up for Vietnam
(EUR +335 million; +15%).
Looking at imports per product category, the
highest increase in values over the last 12
months was for cocoa beans (EUR+612 million;
+15%). Imports of oilseeds other than
soybean (EUR +559 million; +16%), palm oil
(EUR +509 million;+9%) and vegetables (EUR
+369 million;+8%) also increased significantly.
On the other hand, import values decreased in
particular for wheat (EUR -373 million; -24%),
raw tobacco (EUR -318 million;-12%) and
oilcakes (EUR -303 million;-4%).

Focus on:
EU agri-food trade with Japan
On 6 July 2017, the European Union and Japan
reached an agreement in principle on the main
elements of an EU-Japan Economic Partnership
Agreement. The EU-Japan trade deal will be the
most successful agreement ever achieved in
agriculture, providing EU exporters better
opportunities.
It
represents
the
biggest
concession Japan has ever granted
on
agriculture to any trade partner, meaning that
the EU is likely to become the most significant
partner for Japan for agri-trade.

The main EU export products to Japan are pork
meat (21% of EU agri-food exports to Japan),
wines (13%), cigars/cigarettes (6%), cheese
(5%) and spirits (4%).
Imports from Japan mainly consist of soups and
sauces (17%), spirits (12%) and fatty acids and
waxes (9%).
Top EU28 Agri-food exports to Japan in 2016

The EU is currently a net-exporter of agri-food
products
to Japan,
with a surplus of
EUR 5.46 billion in 2016. Japan is the EU's 4th
biggest export destination with EUR 5.77 billion
of agri-food exports. Furthermore, exports to
Japan have increased steadily over the past
years (+3.9%/year). While EU imports from
Japan are small (EUR 311 million per year, 0.3%
of EU total agri-food trade), they have been
rising since 2006 at a rate of 9.4% per year.
