PhD position available
A PhD position is available in the group of Dr. Damien Coudreuse at the Institute of Genetics and Development of
Rennes (IGDR), France. Our team investigates the mechanisms and evolution of cell proliferation, taking
advantage of state-of-the-art approaches including synthetic biology, high-resolution live-cell imaging,
microfluidics, and experimental evolution (for more information, see The proposed project
aims at studying the mechanisms that enhance the proliferation of cells in the absence of important branches of
their natural cell cycle control circuit. These pathways have been identified through experimental evolution assays
using parental strains that showed strong initial growth defects due to alterations in their cell cycle regulatory
network. Selection for improved growth over hundreds of generations has uncovered novel processes that favor cell
proliferation in otherwise compromised genetic backgrounds. Using a multi-disciplinary strategy, the student will
decipher how these mechanisms interact with the cell cycle control system.
We are seeking a highly motivated and hard working candidate to take on this innovative project in a collegial,
interactive and international environment. Candidates with a background in yeast genetics as well as molecular and
cell biology are encouraged to apply. Experience with microscopy will be particularly useful for this project.
Candidates should hold a Master’s degree in biological sciences and have a strong academic record to pass the
selection of the Doctoral School.
Research at the Institute of Genetics and Development of Rennes ( covers a
wide range of subjects in cell biology, taking advantage of most classical model systems while strongly promoting
interdisciplinary approaches. The IGDR is dynamic and expanding, with 21 teams representing 200 international
researchers and staff, including several recently established young groups. The working language of the laboratory
and the institute is English.
The IGDR is located in the city of Rennes, the capital of Brittany in northwestern France. With its rich tradition of
cultural, musical, and artistic events as well as its close proximity to the coast, Rennes is a very welcoming and
pleasant place to live. It is also easily and directly accessible from Paris (around 1h30 by train).
