1. WELCOME & INTRODUCTION
Greater Shepparton City Council
Mayor Welcome
Welcome to Greater
Shepparton.
As Australian’s
premier regional
sporting capital,
we are truly excited
to host one of
the two UCI BMX
Supercross World
Cup rounds along with Bathurst, New South
Wales.
This is the first time a UCI BMX Supercross
World Cup has been held in Australia in over a
decade.
To ensure our international competitors have
a world class experience we have recently
upgraded the Greater Shepparton BMX track
including track re-surfacing, new fast concrete
berms and of course the construction of the
eight-metre starting hill.

During your time with us we encourage you
to make yourself at home and enjoy the
many cafes, restaurants, accommodation
options, shopping, entertainment and visitor
experiences that we have on offer.
Whether it’s taking a dip at Aquamoves,
enjoying our unique chocolate apples,
checking out the Shepparton Motor Museum
or winding down with a ride on many of our
cycling tracks, there is much to enjoy during
your stay with us.
On behalf of Greater Shepparton City Council,
I would like to wish you the best of luck for the
competition, and we hope to see many of those
competing and representing their countries on
the world stage at the Tokyo Olympic Games.
Have a fantastic event.
Cr Seema Abdullah
Mayor
Greater Shepparton City Council

Our city is looking forward to watching some
of the world’s best BMX riders compete,
with our track promising to see some quick

Minister for Tourism, Sport and
Major Events Message

Cycling Australia
Chair’s Message

On behalf of the Andrews Labor
Government, welcome to Victoria
– the nation’s premier sporting
and events state and proud host
of the first round of the 2020 UCI
BMX Supercross World Cup series.

I am delighted
to welcome
everyone to
Shepparton
for Rounds #1
and #2 of the
always exciting
UCI BMX
Supercross
World Cup series.

Shepparton is the place to be for
the best BMX action.
The city last year hosted the
BMX Australia national championships and now 200 of
the world’s top-ranked male and female riders from 30
countries are in town to do battle. There’s a lot on the line
for the locals and internationals.
The UCI BMX Supercross World Cup is the premier BMX
racing series for elite men and women with eight events
across the globe acting as qualifiers for the Olympic
Games and UCI World Championships.
Australian stars including Saya Sakakibara and Anthony
Dean will give the home crowd plenty to cheer about as
they seek to shore up their place in the team for Tokyo.
The Andrews Labor Government is proud to support this
world-class event through the Significant Sporting Events
Program and Regional Events Fund.
More than 650 events have been funded through the
Significant Sporting Events Program and more than half
of those have been held in regional Victoria, boosting local
jobs and economies.
The Regional Events Fund has supported more than 200
events, bringing competitors, officials and supporters to
our communities and inspiring more people to stay active
and healthy through sport.
When not trackside, I encourage you to explore the many
attractions that the Goulburn Valley region has to offer.
To all competitors, the very best of luck and to spectators,
families and friends, I hope that you enjoy the 2020 UCI
BMX Supercross World Cup in Shepparton.
The Hon Martin Pakula MP
Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events

I would like to acknowledge the
traditional owners of the land which
comprises Greater Shepparton. We
pay respect to their tribal elders, we
celebrate their continuing culture and
we acknowledge the memory of their
ancestors.
Cycling Australia is very excited to
present rounds of the UCI BMX
Supercross World Cup in Victoria for the
first time. We have a long and proud
tradition of participation and excellence
in BMX, so it’s particularly pleasing to
have this event on Australian soil.
Over two days at the Shepparton
BMX Track we will witness some of the
world’s very best Supercross cyclists
racing as they chase glory at the Tokyo
2020 Olympic Games.
I would also like to recognise Sport
Australia for its guidance and
significant commitment as Cycling
Australia’s principal partner.
We would also like to recognise all the
event staff and volunteers.
We hope you enjoy the action.

8. ABOUT THE SHEPPARTON
BMX TRACK
The Shepparton BMX track was first built in
the 1980s and the Shepparton BMX Club has
a proud history producing a number of world
champions across various amateur classes with
the highlight being Leigh Egan who in 1984 at
the IBMXF World Tittles won the 17 Boys and
Open Classes effectively becoming Australia’s
first Elite Men’s World Champion.
In 2008 Greater Shepparton City Council in
conjunction with the Shepparton BMX Club
secured the 2010 BMX Australia National
Championships which is one of the biggest
BMX participation events in the southern
hemisphere with over 1,200 participants. With
this event secured to the region, the Council
and Club worked together to build a new world
class track to meet the standards adopted by
BMX Australia based on guidelines for World
Championships published by the Union Cyclist
Internationale (UCI) in 2008. The aim was to
provide a high quality and safe facility for all
users of all competency levels.
In 2009 world renowned BMX track builder
Tom Ritzenthaler who has built Olympic and
World Championships tracks was engaged
to design and supervise the construction of
the Shepparton track. At the time it was the
only permanent track in Australia to meet the
UCI guidelines.

start hill, bitumen berms, raised spectator
viewing areas, landscaped surrounds, extensive
drainage, power upgrades, electronic timing
capacity, storage capacity, perimeter fencing,
scoring hut and improved pre staging
capabilities via the Shepparton velodrome
entrance.
At the time the track was the only facility in
Australia to meet UCI guidelines. In 2018,
further updates occurred, including the first
eight metre start hill in the state of Victoria
which was officially used for the first time at the
BMX Australia National Championships in 2019
and completing the project was the installation
of new lighting for racing and concrete berms.
Over the last decade other significant major
events hosted at the venue include the
2014 Oceania and BMX Australia National
Championships as well as the 2011, 2015 and
2016 Victorian State Championships.
The Shepparton BMX track is located within
Shepparton Sports City
at 96 Packham St Shepparton 3630. GPS
coordinates are 36°21’19.0”S 145°23’29.6”E
The track is considered by riders as one of the
best and fastest in Australia.
