To Whom It May Concern:
It is my pleasure to recommend M. Youssef El Moussaoui who has spent 5 months in our
laboratory (Jan-June 2017) for his Master 2 final internship. This internship was a collaboration
with Dr. Benoit Pichon of the Institute for Physics and Chemistry of Materials (IPCMS, Strasbourg)
on the fabrication and characterization of mixed iron oxide and gold nanoparticle thin films
assembled by the Layer-by-Layer (LbL) approach for magneto-plasmonic applications.
M. El Moussaoui synthesized iron oxide nanoparticles and gold nanoparticles of controlled size
and morphology following procedures available in the lab, and characterized the particles by
electron microscopy (SEM and TEM), electron diffraction, X-ray diffraction, Infrared spectroscopy
(FT-IR) and Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS). He then assembled those particles in thin films using
the LbL approach, with a specific care on the structural control of the assembly (density, interlayer distance, …). The thin films were characterized by SEM and Ellipsometry. The optical
properties were measured by UV-Vis spectroscopy and correlated to the thin film architecture.
He analyzed the data he obtained in a rigorous way and was able to draw appropriate conclusions
from his measurements.
M. El Moussaoui has proven to be a fast-learning, rigorous and careful experimentalist whose
results can be trusted. The results he obtained (completed by some complementary
experiments) will be part of a forthcoming publication. He has shown a very good general
knowledge in physical chemistry and materials science that he could make use of to solve
practical problems he encountered in the lab. He is also very well organized and hard-working.
M. El Moussaoui presented his results during internal meetings, both in French and in English,
and he was able to clearly deliver his message in a rigorous and scientific way. The following
discussions showed that he is a research-oriented thinker, asking himself relevant questions to
better understand his experimental results.
I could appreciate his synthetic mind and his ability to question the relevance of his results,
showing a good scientific maturity and critical mind. Being discreet and reserved in nature, he
has always shown a very professional behavior, which makes working with him a pleasant
experience.
For all these reasons, I am convinced that Mr. Youssef El Moussaoui has the skills, the motivation
and the personality necessary to pursue a scientific carrier, and I thus strongly recommend his
application.
