Text: children for sale
Unicef estimates that 1 million children enter the prostitution trade each year, mostly in
Asia. Thailand alone is home to as many as 800,000 child prostitutes.
In an Askha village in northern Thailand, near the Burmese border, a salesman recently
offered a local man a TV for about $400. When he complained that he could not afford it, a
trafficker stepped in and offered to lend him $1,600 in exchange for his ‘’very pretty little
daughter.’’ Within moments, the man had a new TV; his 13-year-old daughter was off to
Bangkok to repay his debt.
Some experts blame the Asian economic boom for propagating child prostitution by
creating a demand for material goods. Electricity did not begin to reach Thailand’s Akha
villages until about 10 years ago; now signs in nearby towns advertise Nokia wireless phones
and hotels with ‘’Cable TV Arrival’’. It is not hard to see why the locals are so obsessed with
getting a TV. Meanwhile, their children languish in brothels or on the street. Many suffer
from depression, alcoholism or drug addiction. Some are sterile from repeated abortions or
untreated venereal disease.
