The French market reached a value of $361.1 million in 2003, having grown with a

was much stronger than that of the European market, leading to the French market’s
share of the regional market increasing by 1.4 percentage points between 1999 and
2003, accounting for 14.7% of the wider market by the end of this period.
The French RTD tea and coffee market has only one sector which registers any
noticeable value: the iced coffee sector of the market is almost non-existent, the iced
tea sector accounting for 100% of the market’s value generation. The strong tradition
of drinking fresh coffee in continental Europe has served as a considerable brake on
this sector’s movement into the market.
Gong forward, the market is expected to experience gently rising growth rates. By
2008 the market is forecast to reach a value of $469 million, a CAGR of 5.4% in the
2003-2008 period, slightly weaker than the regional market’s CAGR of 5.4%. Despite
it’s size, the French market has demonstrated some of the strongest growth of any

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

The competitive landscape of the French RTD tea and coffee market is dominated by
Unilever Bestfoods France, a division of Unilever which makes the highly popular
Lipton tea. Taking advantage of the strong brand position of Lipton, the company’s
Lipton Iced Tea range, broadened recently with the introduction of ‘Lipton Brisk
Lemonade’, helped the company hold a dominating position in the marketplace.
Only two other players have really existed in the market in recent years, Schweppes
and Coca-Cola. Schweppes’ Oasis Tea was the primary provider of revenues in this
sector of the beverage market, although the company had strengthened its position in
2000 through the acquisition of Snapple.
Coca-Cola’s position in the market came courtesy of its joint venture with Nestle
which produces, amongst a number of other products, Nestea Cool. Nestea cool
generated all of the company’s revenues in this market sector, providing the company
with a small but stable market share. The company’s market position would be
reinforced should Coca-Cola choose to introduce its newly acquired Planet Java
coffee brand to the market.

Cadbury Schweppes plc
Cadbury Schweppes is the third largest soft drinks company and the fourth largest
confectionery company in world. The company also manufactures, markets and
distributes confectionery products through its Cadbury Trebor Bassett division. For
the fiscal year ended December 31 2002, the company generated revenues of $8,563
million, an increase of 7% on the previous year.
Cadbury Schweppes owns some of the world's best known and most popular soft
drinks brands, including Dr Pepper, Canada Dry and Snapple, as well as equally
successful confectionery brands such as Cadbury and Trebor Bassett. Although
based in the UK, the company generates most of its sales in international markets.
Cadbury Schweppes is headquartered in London, UK.

Unilever Bestfoods is the food division of Unilever. Generating more than half of
Unilever's sales, the division was created through the integration of Bestfoods, which
was acquired in 2000. The company reported turnover of E48 billion for fiscal 2002.

Europe, South and North America, Africa and Asia. Unilever Bestfoods is

and sparkling waters, juices, isotonics, and teas. The company operates in 46 states
of the US and all 10 provinces in Canada, and portions of Europe including Belgium,
continental France, Great Britain, Luxembourg, Monaco and the Netherlands. Coca
Cola Enterprises is headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia.

With global operations and some of the best known brands in the world, Nestle S.A.
is the world's largest food manufacturer. In 2002, the company generated revenues of
$64.6 billion, an increase of 28% on the previous year.
Nestle products are available worldwide and include dairy products, coffee, mineral
water, ice cream, chocolate, baby food and pet food. Its largest global brands include
Buitoni, Friskies and Nestle. Nestle is headquartered in Vevey, Switzerland.

Privately held McCain specializes in the production of frozen potato products.
Responsible for the manufacture of one third of the world’s French fries, McCain is
the largest producer in the world. For the year ended June 30, 2002, the company
reported revenues of $4.02 billion, an increase of 15% on the previous year.
McCain produces many other food products, including, juices, drinks, desserts,
pizzas, oven-ready entrées and appetizers. it has more than 50 plants in 13
countries. The company also exports to more than 80 countries, maintaining its own
representatives in locations around the world. McCain is headquartered in New
Brunswick, Canada.
