Africa has always been, for the Planetworkshops,
the continent of innovative possibilities.
For the first time since the Earth Summit of Rio, in
1992, COP 21 will be the international scene for
legitimate claims from African leaders and
entrepreneurs.
Global warming constitutes an unfair reality of the
populations, the rulers and the companies of the
continent.
No meeting, no forum, and especially no solution
have never been proposed facing the perils that
African nations are facing today. The
Planetworkshops have the ambition to create
such a unique space in order to favour meetings
between stakeholders from all over the world.
The LAB will be the incarnation of this space…

The Planetworkshops - Presentation
Created in 2006 by Eric Bazin and George J. Gendelman, The Planetworkshops are a think tank rich of seven
years of experience in bringing together stakeholders concerned by the emerging challenges of sustainable
development. By acquiring each year a strong recognition on the international scene, The Planetworkshops
wishes to gather and increase awareness on a global change of our ways of life and governance. This think
tank works on the transformation of societies towards new models of development which are more respectful
of human beings and of the environment in industrialized and developing countries.
The Planetworkshops’ mission gathers several objectives:

Animating and challenging the life of ideas around sustainable development issues;
Encouraging intellectual innovation and produce expertise to accompany the long-term vision of
decision-makers;
Meshing networks of influence and conducting lobbying actions towards decision-makers;
Fostering collaboration between public and private spheres, and serving as a communication channel
between politicians, businesses, experts and civil society actors;
Valorising innovative solutions and spreading good practices sharing.

The Planetworkshops’ networks are multi-disciplinary and international:

International organizations
Small and multinational companies
Government representatives and local political leaders
Scientific and academic institutions
Non-Governmental Organizations
Personalities - Opinion leaders
Medias
Artists…

Those "Planetworkers" gather annually at our major event, the Global Conference, a link between
stakeholders to carry out reflections initiated by The Planetworkshops. Provider of solutions for change,
beyond the Global Conference, The Planetworkshops sets up each year working commissions bringing
together international experts to make concrete recommendations to decision-makers, the advances being
presented during breakfasts and conferences organized at the Hôtel de l’Industrie in partnership with La
Société d’Encouragement pour l’Industrie Nationale. As a think tank, The Planetworkshops are also
occasionally solicited for the development of thematic conferences' program or organization in France and
abroad (CSR Conference in Pointe-Noire, Châlons-en-Champagne Fair, Rio Earth Summit). The think tank also
develops his reflections through the publication of thematic studies or journals (La Revue de la Terre).

Le LAB - Land of African Business
COP 21 - AFRICA OFF EVENT
December 2nd – 11th, 2015

D

uring the COP 21, which will take place at
Le Bourget - France, from November 30th
to
December
11th
2015,
The
Planetworkshops are pleased to organize
in the private mansion of the Société
d’Encouragement de l’Industrie Nationale the
"AFRICA OFF COP 21" especially dedicated to all the
African countries.
This "Land of African Business ", located in the
heart of Paris in the Hôtel de l’Industrie et de
l’Innovation, will be an African showcase and a
particular place for sharing the innovative "Best
Practices" implemented in Africa around global
warming issues.
This forum, organized in partnership with the
Franco- African Foundation for Growth as well as
NGOs, experts, students, industrials groups
involved in the African continent will allow the
"African voice» to be heard, which has
unfortunately so far not resonated enough in the
previous Conferences of Parties.
Beyond being considered as a truly original
initiative in this international forum of
negotiations, this special African meeting, located
in the heart of the French capital, will be very
attractive for French and international medias. As
a matter of fact, The Planetworkshops wishes to
offer during the Conferences of Parties a unique
and particular place that will bring together
delegations – business managers, political,
Medias, artists, experts, and students – from all
African countries.

In 2009, in Copenhagen, African countries had
unfortunately not been heard. Threatening to
leave the table of negotiations, their legitimate
claims did not find echo enhancing their position
with major stakeholders involved in the climate
change: United States, China, India and the
European Union.
6 years later, things have changed!
Indeed, for the first time in its history, the African
continent can legitimately claim the world's
highest growth rates. In addition, issues like
health, food safety, urbanization, climate change,
waste management, women's rights, green
financial mechanisms, education or even green
business, will be at the heart of negotiations at
COP 21.
The President of the French Republic, Mr. François
Hollande, has made a major diplomatic, political
and economic marker of his five years of term. The
initiative led by the Planetworkshops, the Société
d’Encouragement de l’Industrie Nationale and all
partners who wish to join us, will sound like an
echo to this international ambition.
Through conferences and meetings, we will offer
the African nations a unique "place of life and
hospitality”, a way to make their voices heard
during this COP21 and enhance their expertise and
views on climate change.
The “Land of African Business ” might also be
considered the place where are developed,
through
a
Reflection
Committee,
recommendations fostering a convergence of
positions

Indeed, the highest authorities of the 54 countries
of the African continent will be present to make
their voices heard during what is already
presented as the "final climate negotiations" for
the situation is considered as dramatic.

adopting an interdisciplinary approach focused on
partnerships.
Giving a voice to youth
We pay a very particular attention to the voice of the
new generations, whose participation is essential for
the discussions, and we aim to give the students a key
role in our works, benefiting from the federation of
prestigious schools and universities, both French

wihich will be available on tablets made with
recycled materials during all the duration of the
LAB.
Also via a sensibilisation session dedicated to
children around Paris focusing on African culture
and artistic traditions, as well as a photography
exhibition on the Saint-Germain-des-Prés square.
The support of several partners

Innovation at the heart of discussions
As a major lever for action to favour the transition
towards a viable and sustainable economic model,
The Buisiness Innovation Places will thus aim to allow
young African project holders to introduce their
innovative ideas for a new model of development.

will organize a gala dinner, the “Club XXIème
Siècle” will participate in the debates, activating
its networks, the “Fondation franco-africaine pour
la croissance”, the “Fondation Energies pour
l’Afrique“, the Amadeus Institute and the Aga
Khan Foundation will also be on our side.

The African Rethink Awards (ARAs)
Foreword
For the 1st edition of the Land of African Business, a unique place on the fringes of COP21 for new encounters
and for the exchange of African and international entrepreneurs’ Best Practices, The Planetworkshops will
host the African Rethink Awards ceremony on December, 11th 2015 at the Hotel de l’Industrie, Paris.
The ambition which led to the creation of these awards is to identify, analyze, favor and promote the
development of young entrepreneurs’ startups, may they be African or from the African diaspora, whose
actions try to respond efficiently to the issues related to societal, economic, social and environmental
development in Africa.
In this regard, 100 shortlisted startups will be invited to present the vision behind their enterprises, during
the 9 days of the Land of African Business, and its highlight: the African Rethink Awards ceremony.

Three categories of Awards
Three categories of prizes will be awarded to support the winning startups and give them a well-deserved
visibility.

The Grand Prize, whose Laureate will be awarded €10.000

entrepreneur whose business plan is the most profitable and the most efficient to solve the problems

This prize aims at awarding the entrepreneur for the exemplarity of his/her startup in any field that favors
the transition to a more viable and sustainable economic development in Africa.
Through that prize, the partners of the ARAs wish to encourage the initiatives of entrepreneurs from the
African diaspora throughout the world. It is meant to incite the diaspora to share its experience for the benefit
of African people and for the development of the African continent.

The LAB and La Société d’Encouragement
pour l’Industrie Nationale
La Société d’Encouragement pour l’Industrie Nationale
La Société d’Encouragement pour l’Industrie
Nationale is an association founded in 1801 by the
three consuls Bonaparte, Cambacérès and Lebrun.
Declared of Public Utility since 1824, it aims at
stimulating the industrial development in France, to
favour technological innovation and to enhance
entrepreneurship.
It made a direct contribution to the economic
development of France during the 19th century in several domains, from the first railways to the creation of
the first infrastructures of energy production and distribution. Its action has been decisive in the matter of
patents and normalization. It has been the precursor of ANVAR, INPI, OSEO and the Laboratoire National
d’Essais.

Its Mission
Faithful to the objectives defined at its beginning, La Société d’Encouragement pour l’Industrie Nationale
continued for two centuries its mission to support the large industrial, economic and social mutations:
• encourage the builders of tomorrow's industry ,
• transmit innovations and know-how,
• enhance the made-in France.
La Société d’Encouragement pour l’Industrie Nationale is organized around eight committees composed of
people from different sectors (industry, economy, research and university).

Africa at the Hôtel de l’Industrie
An ideal gathering place
Too often ignored, the voice of African nationals has never really echoed during Conferences of Parties on
Climate Change.
Since the Earth Summit in Rio, in 1992, the economic, political, diplomatic and environmental challenges
have been transformed by the emergence of Africa, a continent which cannot be overlooked anymore.
In order to make the African voice heard, to discover innovative initiatives from competitive startups, to share
Best Practices developed all over the continent, to gather the entrepreneurs’ networks, to answer to
international media, to federate creators of wealth, the Planetworkshops organizes, at the heart of Paris, the
LAB.
During 9 days, the heart of a winning Africa will beat at the Hôtel de l’Industrie at the core of
the French capital.
This place specifically dedicated to Africa, for Africans, organized by Africans, will constitute a unique and
original laboratory, complementary to the official negotiations at Le Bourget, and essential to the emergence
of African models, which are still often ignored.

A place marked by expertise
Important site dedicated to the development of industry, to innovation, to inventions, to entrepreneurship
and to promising artisanal and industrial French skills, the Hôtel de l’Industrie is built on the Saint-Germaindes-Près square, close to the abbey-church.
The Hôtel de l’Industrie is, with the church and the Deux-Magots café, one of the most important parts of the
famous Saint-Germain-des-Près square.
Head office of the Société d’Encouragement pour l’Industrie Nationale, which built it in 1851, the Hôtel de
l’Industrie has always been a place dedicated to the encouragement of the French economy’s modernization
and development; it has also been one of the key places of the political, social, cultural or simply festive life of
the district and of the left bank.
Every year, the building hosts the “Chaptal de l’Industrie” ceremony, restoring the image of Business Manager,
and the “Mongolfier” ceremony, aiming to support emerging talents.
