20.1 – REBUILD (and continuation of repair) of GEARBOX A
Remontage (et suite de la réfection !) de la boîte "A"

NB: the problems regarding the longitudinal play (4mm) of the two primary half-shafts and the axial play of their bushes will
only be finally resolved here . (Michel finalizes box "A") The solutions presented on this page are therefore not final ...

After an unexpected little detour via Koeln (?), Michel's package has arrived!

The easiest way is to install the rectified starter crown "upside down" ... The steel of 1924 was already very strong, probably
casehardened and Michel had to use a very hard tool to get it right ...

A few strokes of the mallet ; it is in place:

Then we attack with optimism the gearbox with the new parts ... From bottom to top, the reverse gear re-bushed as new: the
intermediate shaft also re-bushed with its new shaft and the new rear support bush:

Everything is going well, it's great. But ... we present the drum, and it touches the two shafts of the brake shoes . The two
primary half shafts are too FAR advanced, always the 4 mm problem ... . We are stopping there for today!

So today decision to replace a 4 mm washer between the front primary half shaft and its bearing. Inevitably it brings the drum
4 mm back, but the pinions are not correctly facing each other, and I don't like it ...

Long discussion with Michel during the night, and he (obviously) understood the problem: the cone of the rear primary halfshaft which carries the drum is only angled by 4 °, so a very slight wear strongly shifts the whole thing forward . So I remove
the washer, there will be 4 mm of play between the two primary half shafts, but this is not very serious, the fitting is sufficient.
Much more important, to perfectly wedge the drum on the cone of the rear primary half-shaft and against the bearing without
leaving any play, in order to prevent the bearing from rotating in its cage (as was the case on this box). The oil-thrower ring is
eliminated since the bearing is sealed, as well as the "crushing washers", replaced by a conical washer.

After a lot of measurements, I arrive at a result which seems very correct to me. Two flat washers plus a conical, the drum is
perfectly wedged, we will know about that in the next century ..

Another useless old washer, it would prevent the flange from installing the bearing correctly ...

Almost finished ...

Almost finished? There is always room for improvement ... isn't it? my friend Michel!
The small clearance of 4 mm between the two half shafts "disturbs us". We therefore decide to recover the front half-shaft
from the box from José Franssen's (Disassembly of gearbox "F") It is in better condition than that of the A, except the bronze
bush (completely dead) fitting with the rear half shaft.

21
And for good reason! Although this bush could not turn in the shaft due to serious tightening(????), the lubrication holes are
offset by 90 °, not opposite therefore! ... Peace to the soul of the one guilty for that:

P
H

But the half shaft is in good condition, better than that of the original of the A gearbox. Michel will therefore machine a new
bush whose internal diameter will be adapted to the external diameter of the rear half shaft (which is "lowered" from 18 mm probably - to 17.93) ... And we will take the opportunity to increase its length by 4 mm, so we catch up with the play ... André,
are you still following ? test tomorrow!

I take off the dead bush with the Dremel ... and measure the inside diameter, 21.10. . The length of the new bush will be
approximately 26 mm, so as to compensate for the play of 4 mm. If necessary, I will correct the part that will be at the bottom
of the shaft with a file ...

The rings took a long time to arrive ... As usual, an exceptional job by Michel.
So, two new bushes ….

1) outer diameter 21.10, inner diameter 17.94, length 26.50
2) outer diameter 21.08, inner diameter 17.95, length 26.10

No 1 fits without play, but not too tight . There will therefore be no shrinking problem, and the rear half shaft should have a
play of 1 / 100th. Although it is not purely original, I will therefore fit with “Loctite forte,” and will not forget to drill the two
lubrication holes (finally everything will be sent to Michel ( Reassembly (and continuation of the repair!) of gearbox "A" ) to
achieve a perfect job ...

Here it is the rear half shaft which will not be used, just to make a nice photo!

24

It will also probably need to replace the bush entering the crankshaft, that of the half shaft seems a little too worn; to be
checked.

We are never happy ... The shafts of the forks as well as the "stirrup" which holds them are very worn, and this looks now a
mess compared with the rest of this box! So taking off the forks and their shafts for shipment to Italy where Michel will make
new shafts and reload the worn parts.

Photos of the two half primary shafts in place, including the front one to be replaced by the one from box "F" (It will also be
sent to Italy for construction of a new rear bush tight enough ) .

25
A few days later, I take off the two half primary shafts in order to take measurements for the manufacture of the new fork
shafts ...
Summer break, we will resume work in early September!
Saturday September 24, 2016
Resumption of work ... Michel believes that, despite the measures, he could not perfectly position the notches (intended to
receive the balls of the forks to lock them in place) in the new shafts without having the box "on hand". And indeed, a slight
error could cause a disastrous contact of the sliding gears with those of the intermediate shaft which they should not meet ...
Provisional reassembly of the box for shipping, with the front primary original half-shaft which will be replaced by that of box
"F".
The intermediate shaft and the reverse gear are already in place and adjusted; finished! .

Then we fit the assembly into the casing by the front (the bronze bush on the side of the grooves or crankshaft fell ????; not a
problem as front half shaft of the A box will be replaced by the one from the F box )
